Website costs, UK

How much does a website cost in the UK?

There is no single price for a UK website, because a five-page brochure site and a membership platform are different jobs. This guide explains what drives the cost, what you will pay to keep a site running, and where our starting prices sit.

Overview

The short answer, and the honest one.

Search for website prices in the UK and you will see everything from free builders to six-figure agency projects. Both ends can be right for someone. The useful question is not what websites cost on average, but what your site needs to do, and what it will cost to build properly and then keep healthy.

We are a WordPress team based in Nigeria working remotely for UK organisations, so we will not quote you London studio rates or invent averages. Below we set out the factors we price on, the running costs every UK site carries, and the four starting prices we publish.

In detail

What drives the cost.

01

What actually drives the price

Five things move a quote more than anything else. The number of distinct page templates, not the number of pages. How much custom functionality is needed, such as booking, member areas or calculators. Whether you take payments and in how many ways. How many systems the site must connect to, like a CRM or finance package. And the state of your content: copy and images that are ready save real time, while content still being written usually extends a project.

02

Brochure and corporate websites

A corporate site presents your organisation, services, people and news, and turns visitors into enquiries. The work is mostly discovery, design and a well-built custom theme that staff can edit without breaking layouts. Our HRD2 project in the UK is this kind of site. These usually sit within our strategy and design range, which starts from $1,500 per project, rising with the number of templates and any specialist features.

03

Online shops and booking sites

Selling online adds a store catalogue, a checkout, payment providers such as Stripe or GoCardless, delivery rules, VAT handling and the emails customers receive. UK consumer law also shapes the build: buyers of goods generally have 14 days to cancel, so returns information and refund processes need to be clear. Stores and booking platforms fall under development, which starts from $5,000 per project, because the logic needs testing as much as the design.

04

Platforms, portals and learning sites

Member portals, e-learning platforms, recruitment systems and dashboards are software as much as websites. They involve user roles, records, workflows, reports and often integrations. Our BFI School and ASEP Logistics projects show the scale. These start from $5,000 and are scoped in stages. A careful discovery phase is the best way to control cost, because it fixes what the first version must do before anyone builds it.

05

Running costs to budget for each year

A website keeps costing money after launch, and a fair budget includes all of it. A .co.uk or .uk domain renews each year. Hosting is usually monthly or annual. Business email on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 is charged per user. Payment providers charge per transaction according to their published rates. Plugins with paid licences renew annually. Then there is care: updates, backups, security and fixes. Our managed services, covering hosting and maintenance, start from $2,000 per year.

06

Moving an existing site

If you are leaving another CMS, a website builder or an old host, migration is its own piece of work. Content has to be moved and checked, old addresses redirected so search rankings and links survive, and a .uk domain transferred by changing its Nominet IPS tag rather than with a code. Migrations start from $1,000, and they can be combined with a redesign when the old site needs both.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the average cost of a website in the UK?

Any average hides a huge range, from free builders to large agency platforms, so we do not quote one. A more useful approach is to describe what your site must do and get a written scope. Our published starting points are $1,500 for strategy and design, $5,000 for development, $1,000 for migrations and $2,000 per year for managed services.

How much does a website cost per month in the UK?

Monthly costs come from hosting, email accounts, paid plugin licences, payment fees and any maintenance plan. Some are billed annually, such as your .co.uk domain. Our managed services start from $2,000 per year and bundle hosting with updates, backups, security and support, which many clients find easier to budget for than separate bills.

Why are your prices in US dollars?

We work with clients in Africa, the UK and the USA, so we publish one set of prices in dollars. If your finance team would rather receive a quote in pounds, raise it during scoping and we can discuss it. The agreed price is always set out in writing before work starts.

Is a WordPress website cheaper than a bespoke build?

Usually, because WordPress gives you a proven content system, user management and a huge plugin ecosystem, so budget goes on what makes your site different. We still write custom themes and plugins where they are needed, which keeps the site lean rather than overloaded with add-ons.

Do we need to budget for VAT?

Your own VAT position depends on your organisation, so check with your accountant. On the website side, if your business is VAT registered, which is required once taxable turnover passes £90,000 over 12 months, your store will need VAT configured correctly in prices, invoices and receipts. We build that into the scope.

How do we get an exact price?

Book an intro call or send us a brief. We ask follow-up questions, look at your current site if you have one, and send a written scope with deliverables, timeline and price. Nothing starts until you approve it, and the scope becomes the reference for the whole project.
