Custom Theme Development

Bespoke WordPress themes built from scratch to match a specific design and performance requirement. Not an off-the-shelf theme adapted to fit the brief.

Overview

A theme written for this platform, this brand, and this build.

An off-the-shelf theme is built to suit thousands of websites. It ships with layouts, options and code for all of them, and the brief has to bend to fit what it already does. The result usually looks close to the design, loads more than it needs, and gets harder to change over time.

We write the theme from scratch, from a signed-off design. The structure, components and styles exist because this platform needs them, and nothing else is loaded. Performance and security are built in from the start: caching, image optimisation, Core Web Vitals and hardening are addressed before QA, not after launch.

Because the theme is documented and follows WordPress standards, your team can update content without touching code, and any competent WordPress developer can pick it up and extend it.

What is included

What a custom theme build includes.

  • 01

    Built from the approved design

The theme follows the signed-off design exactly, from the brief through wireframes and visual design.

  • 02

    Written from scratch

No off-the-shelf theme underneath. Only the code this platform needs.

  • 03

    Design system components

Consistent components that keep the platform coherent as it grows.

  • 04

    Performance built in

Caching, image optimisation and Core Web Vitals addressed at code level.

  • 05

    Security and hardening

Configured from the start, and checked before anything goes live.

  • 06

    Editable by your team

A platform your team can update, or hand to us to maintain.

Full ownership of everything built: no platform fees, no licence costs, no lock-in.

“Our website had not been updated since 2017 and it showed. WPFlat rebuilt it to reflect who we are today: a confident, contemporary, and values-driven consulting firm. The end result is aesthetically pleasing and highly functional.”

How we work

How a WordPress project runs at WPFlat.

Six phases. Each one exists because skipping it produces a worse result.

  1. 01

    Discovery

The brief, the operations, and the integrations in writing.

  2. 02

    Design

Designed and approved before development begins.

  3. 03

    Build

Built from the approved design on staging.

  4. 04

    Review

Written sign-off before anything goes live.

  5. 05

    Launch

A managed technical event, not a button click.

  6. 06

    After launch

The same team stays as your technical partner.

Every project is different, and the process adapts to the scope. Tell us what you need WordPress to do and we will show you what the process looks like for your project.
