Overview

A specialist WordPress team for Ethiopia.

Building a website for an Ethiopian audience raises questions that a generic template does not answer. Customers expect to pay with telebirr or CBE Birr rather than a foreign card. Dates may need to make sense in the Ethiopian calendar. Since 2024, the Personal Data Protection Proclamation has asked where personal data is stored, not only how it is protected.

WPFlat is a specialist WordPress agency and part of Digitalzooks, founded in 2020. We work with Ethiopian organisations remotely, from our team in Nigeria. What we bring is the same team and process behind education platforms, ticketing systems and portals for clients in Nigeria, the UK and the USA, applied carefully to Ethiopian payments, law and audiences.

In detail

Built for Ethiopia.

01

Payments built around telebirr and local wallets

Stripe does not support Ethiopian businesses, so an online shop or fees portal that relies on it will simply not work for most buyers. Ethio Telecom reports more than 60 million telebirr customers, and gateways such as Chapa bring telebirr, CBE Birr, Awash Birr, M-Pesa, cards and PayPal together behind one integration in ETB or USD. SantimPay, licensed by the National Bank of Ethiopia as a payment gateway operator, is another route. We choose the gateway with you, build the checkout around the methods your customers actually hold, and test every confirmation and refund path before launch.

02

Hosting decisions shaped by Proclamation No. 1321/2024

Article 22 of the Personal Data Protection Proclamation, titled Data Sovereignty, requires controllers and processors to ensure personal data is stored on a server or data centre in Ethiopia, and cross-border transfers are permitted only under set conditions. The Ethiopian Communications Authority regulates the law, opened a registration portal in late 2025 and still has directives pending. We do not give legal advice, but we raise these points at scoping, map which forms collect personal data, and plan hosting, backups and third-party tools so your legal adviser has a clear picture to approve.

03

Dates, times and languages that read correctly

Ethiopia's civil calendar has thirteen months, and many people count the hours from dawn, so a published time can be misread by six hours. For event pages, admissions deadlines and class timetables we make the calendar explicit, and where it helps we show both Ethiopian and Gregorian dates. Amharic and Tigrinya use the Ge'ez script, and Oromo, Somali and Afar are also federal working languages. We test fonts, menus and search in every language you publish, rather than assuming English-only layouts will hold.

04

What we build on WordPress

Our work runs from strategy and design through custom development to long-term care. That includes company websites and redesigns, WooCommerce stores, membership and learning platforms, portals and dashboards, integrations with the systems you already run, migrations from other platforms, and managed hosting through our partners Cloudways and Hostinger. Strategy and design starts from $1,500 per project, development from $5,000 per project, migrations from $1,000 per migration and managed services from $2,000 per year, always confirmed in a written scope.

05

Working with a team in another time zone

Addis Ababa runs on East Africa Time, UTC+3, two hours ahead of Lagos, with no daylight saving change on either side. That gives a full shared working day: a 10am meeting in Addis is 8am for us. We work through scheduled calls, shared project boards and written updates, so decisions are recorded and nobody waits on an inbox. You keep ownership of your domain, hosting account and code from the first day.

These platforms were built by our Nigeria-based team for clients elsewhere; we show them because they involve the payments, learning tools and registrations Ethiopian organisations ask about.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Have you worked with clients in Ethiopia before?

Not yet. Our clients so far are in Nigeria, the UK and the USA, and every case study we show was delivered by our team in Nigeria. We say so plainly because trust matters more than a flattering claim. What carries over is the method: careful scoping, tested payment integrations and documented builds, now applied to Ethiopian payment methods, domains and data law.

Can our customers pay with telebirr?

Yes, through a gateway. Chapa's documentation lists telebirr alongside CBE Birr, Awash Birr, M-Pesa, cards and PayPal, and SantimPay also processes telebirr. Ethio Telecom also offers merchant integration through its telebirr developer portal. Each method has transaction limits, so we check them against your typical order value before we design the checkout.

Does our website data have to stay in Ethiopia?

Proclamation No. 1321/2024 includes a data sovereignty article requiring personal data to be stored on a server or data centre in Ethiopia, and limits transfers abroad. The Ethiopian Communications Authority is still finalising directives. We map the personal data your site collects and design hosting and backups accordingly, and we recommend confirming the final approach with your legal adviser.

How do you invoice clients in Ethiopia?

Our prices are set in US dollars and every engagement is scoped and invoiced in writing. Because the birr has been market-determined since July 2024, its value against the dollar can move, so we agree payment milestones at the start and you can plan how and when to convert. We do not quote birr prices of our own.

What hours will your team be available?

Our team works on West Africa Time, two hours behind Addis Ababa, so most of your business day overlaps with ours. Morning calls in Addis fall early in our day and afternoon calls fit comfortably. When we book meetings we state the time in East Africa Time to avoid any confusion with the Ethiopian clock.

How does a project start?

With a short discovery conversation about your goals, audience and constraints, followed by a written scope and quote. For Ethiopian projects that conversation also covers payment gateway accounts, domain registration with Ethio Telecom and how personal data will be stored. Work begins once the scope is agreed and the first milestone is in place.
