School websites, UK

School website design for UK schools and trusts

We design WordPress websites for schools that help parents find what they need and make statutory information easy for staff to keep up to date. Accessibility and pupil privacy are part of the build, not an afterthought.

Overview

School Websites for organisations in the United Kingdom.

A school website serves many audiences at once: prospective parents comparing schools, current families checking term dates, staff applicants, governors and inspectors. It also has to carry information the school is required to publish. Getting that balance right is mostly a matter of structure and good editing tools.

Our education work includes the Alvina Schools virtual learning environment and the BFI School online platform. For UK schools we build on WordPress so office and teaching staff can update news, letters and policies themselves, without waiting on a supplier.

In detail

School Websites in the United Kingdom, in detail.

01

Statutory information that is easy to find

Maintained schools in England must publish set information online, including behaviour, charging and complaints policies, curriculum details, Ofsted reports, SEND information, pupil premium and PE and sport premium details, governance and results, and admissions arrangements where the school sets them. We create a clear statutory information section that mirrors the Department for Education's guidance, so staff know where each item goes and can see what needs reviewing.

02

Accessible to every family

Public sector websites must meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. Schools are partially exempt, but content parents need to use school services, such as forms, is still covered, and an accessibility statement is required. We design and build to AA throughout, test with a keyboard and assistive technology checks, and provide a draft statement for you to review. Readable text and simple navigation also help families using translation tools.

03

Pupil data handled carefully

School websites can easily over-share. We build forms that collect only what is needed, keep submissions out of plain email where they contain sensitive details, and give staff guidance on photo and name consent before publishing pupil images or achievements. Admissions and contact forms are designed with UK GDPR in mind, so your data protection officer can see exactly where information goes and who can access it.

04

News, calendars, letters and payments

Day-to-day content is where school sites succeed or fail. We provide simple tools for news posts, term dates and event calendars, a letters archive parents can search, and clear pages for clubs, uniform and transport. Where the school uses an existing parent payment or communication system, we link to it clearly rather than duplicating it. Staff can schedule posts in advance, so letters and reminders go live at the right moment even during holidays.

05

Costs for a school website

Most school websites fall under strategy and design, from $1,500 per project, with development from $5,000 for portals or integrations. Hosting and maintenance through managed services start from $2,000 per year. Everything is scoped in writing. Schools and trusts often need to plan spending around budget years, so we can phase work, for example launching the core site first and adding a trust-wide news feed or alumni area later. The written scope sets out each phase and its price separately.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you know what UK schools must publish online?

We structure the site around the Department for Education's guidance on what maintained schools must publish, and adapt it for academies, which follow their funding agreement and related guidance. Your school remains responsible for the content, but the structure makes gaps easy to spot.

Can staff update the website themselves?

Yes. We train office and teaching staff on a video call and give them a short written guide. News, letters, calendars and policies can all be updated without technical knowledge, and we lock design elements so pages stay consistent. Training can be repeated for new staff when needed.

Can you build sites for a multi-academy trust?

Yes. WordPress can run a trust site and individual school sites from one installation, sharing a design system while letting each school manage its own content. We scope this based on how much schools need to vary. Each school's statutory section stays separate and clearly labelled.

How do you handle photos of pupils?

The decision to publish rests with the school and its consent records. We help by building simple options to publish images without names, and by keeping media libraries organised so images can be removed quickly if consent is withdrawn. Staff are shown how to add image descriptions for accessibility at the same time.

Can you move our site from a school website provider?

Usually, yes. We export or copy the content, rebuild it in WordPress and redirect old addresses. Migrations start from $1,000, and we check your current contract for notice periods before planning dates. Old letters and policies are moved too, so families can still find them.
