How much does a website cost in Tanzania?

There is no single price for a website in Tanzania, because a five-page company profile and a shop taking mobile money are different jobs. This guide explains what moves the figure, what you will pay for every year, and where our starting prices sit.

Overview

The short answer, and the honest one.

Search for website design prices in Tanzania and you will find quotes that differ by a wide margin for what sounds like the same thing. The difference is almost always in what is included: who writes the content, how payments work, whether the site comes in Kiswahili and English, and who looks after it once it is live.

We are a WordPress agency based in Nigeria working with organisations across Africa, the UK and the USA. We price in US dollars and scope every engagement in writing. Below we set out how we think about cost, without inventing typical market figures we cannot stand behind.

In detail

What drives the cost.

01

The six things that set the price

Templates matter more than page count: ten pages built from two layouts cost less than five with unique designs. Features come next, since payments, bookings, member areas and integrations each add development and testing. Content is the third factor, especially if you need it written or translated into Kiswahili. Design approach matters too, as adapting a solid theme is quicker than designing from nothing. Then there is data handling under the Personal Data Protection Act, 2022, and finally how much care you want after launch.

02

Company and organisation websites

A site that explains who you are, what you offer and how to reach you is the lightest kind of project. The effort goes into discovery, structure, writing, design and a well-built theme, plus contact forms that ask for consent properly. This work falls under our Strategy and Design service, which starts from $1,500 per project. Adding a second language, a news section, a downloads library or several custom page layouts moves the figure upwards.

03

Online shops with mobile money

An ecommerce site has far more moving parts: product catalogue, stock, delivery zones, receipts and a payment gateway. In Tanzania that gateway is usually a local aggregator such as Selcom, Pesapal or AzamPay, because Stripe and Paystack do not serve the country. Testing every wallet and card route, handling a customer who misses the phone prompt and reconciling orders all take time. Shops are Development projects, starting from $5,000 per project.

04

Portals, schools and learning platforms

Fee payment portals, e-learning platforms, recruitment systems and member directories sit at the upper end of the range because they carry logins, roles, workflows and sensitive records. They also need the most careful thought about the 2022 Act: registration with the Commission, where data is stored and who can see it. These are Development projects from $5,000 per project, and many are scoped in phases so you launch the core first and add features later.

05

Running costs to budget for every year

A website keeps costing a little after launch. Budget for your domain, renewed annually through a TZNIC accredited registrar if you use .tz or .co.tz; hosting, ideally managed; business email per mailbox if you use Google Workspace or Microsoft 365; and gateway fees on each sale. Note that foreign software subscriptions may now include Tanzanian VAT for unregistered buyers. Our Managed Services, covering hosting through partners, updates, security and backups, start from $2,000 per year.

06

How to get an accurate quote

Bring three things to a first conversation: what the site must achieve, a list of features you know you need, and any existing site, domain or content. We then send a written scope listing every page type, feature, integration and deliverable, with a fixed price in US dollars and a timeline. If something is unclear, we say so in the scope rather than guessing. Nothing starts until you have approved it.

Two examples show where larger budgets go: the BFI School platform, with courses, certificates and payments in four currencies, and the Technext events platform, which sold and scanned more than 10,000 tickets.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why do you quote in US dollars rather than shillings?

We scope and invoice every project in US dollars wherever the client is based, which keeps our pricing consistent. Your local running costs, such as the domain, gateway fees and any local services, are paid in shillings directly to those providers. If your finance team needs particular documents for paying a USD invoice, we provide them.

What is the cheapest website you build?

Our Strategy and Design service starts from $1,500 per project, which covers a focused company or organisation website. We would rather build a smaller site well than a large one in a hurry, so if your budget is tight we suggest launching the essential pages first and adding sections later.

Do we pay for the domain and hosting separately?

Yes. Domains are registered in your name and renewed each year, and hosting is a recurring cost. We recommend keeping both in accounts you control. If you take our Managed Services, from $2,000 per year, we arrange hosting through our partners Cloudways or Hostinger and look after updates, backups and security.

Does a bilingual site cost more?

Usually yes, though less than building twice. The structure is set up once, then each page has a Kiswahili and an English version. The main extra costs are writing or checking the second language and testing both. We include it in the scope from the start, which is cheaper than adding it later.

Are payment gateway fees included in your price?

No. Gateways such as Selcom, Pesapal, AzamPay and Flutterwave charge their own fees per transaction, which you pay to them under your merchant agreement. We help you compare those terms and set up the integration; the fees themselves come from the provider.

Can we pay in stages?

We agree the payment schedule in the written scope. Larger projects are usually split into milestones tied to clear deliverables such as approved designs, a working build and launch. That way you pay as you see progress, and both sides know exactly what each stage includes.
