Ecommerce websites for Tanzania, with every wallet at checkout

We build WooCommerce shops for Tanzanian sellers whose customers pay by phone first and card second. Shops are development projects starting from $5,000 and every one is scoped in writing.

Overview

Ecommerce Websites for organisations in Tanzania.

In Tanzania the mobile money market is split across several wallets. M-Pesa leads, but Mixx by Yas and Airtel Money hold large shares too, so a shop that supports only one wallet turns away a big part of its audience.

WooCommerce gives you a shop you own on your own domain, with no platform commission on sales beyond your gateway's fees. We set it up so products, stock, payments and deliveries line up, and your team can run it day to day.

In detail

Ecommerce Websites in Tanzania, in detail.

01

Covering every wallet with one integration

TCRA's June 2026 figures put M-Pesa at 40.6 per cent of mobile money accounts, Mixx by Yas at 32.0 per cent and Airtel Money at 16.4 per cent. Rather than integrate each network separately, we usually connect an aggregator. Pesapal's WooCommerce plugin covers M-Pesa, Airtel, Tigo Pesa and major cards; AzamPay prompts AzamPesa, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money, HaloPesa and M-Pesa. We compare fees and settlement terms with you before choosing.

02

Card payments without Stripe

Stripe does not list Tanzania on its global availability page, and Paystack does not serve the country either, so cards also run through local providers. Selcom, regulated by the Bank of Tanzania, takes Visa, Mastercard and American Express for online stores with 3D Secure, and offers next-day or real-time settlement. That matters if you sell to tourists or diaspora buyers who prefer cards over a Tanzanian wallet.

03

When the customer misses the prompt

A phone-prompt checkout fails in ways a card form does not. The customer may not see the request, may have too little balance, or may enter the wrong PIN. We design each path: clear instructions before the prompt, a waiting screen that updates itself, and an easy retry. Orders only move to paid when the gateway's callback confirms it, so stock counts and dispatch lists stay accurate.

04

Order data and the PDPC

Every order captures a name, phone number and delivery address, so your shop falls under the Personal Data Protection Act, 2022. We keep stored data to what fulfilment needs, leave card details with the gateway, add a separate opt-in for SMS and email marketing, and lock down the admin area. The Act expects breaches to be reported to the Commission promptly, so we add monitoring that would alert you early.

05

Delivery across a large country

Selling beyond your own city needs clear delivery rules. We set up zones and rates for the regions you serve, pickup points if you use them, and order statuses dispatch staff can update from a phone. Customers get updates at each step by email or SMS, which cuts down on calls asking where their parcel is. If your courier offers an API, tracking details can flow into each order automatically.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Which gateway should a Tanzanian shop use?

It depends on your products, volumes and how you want to be paid. Pesapal and AzamPay both have WooCommerce plugins for mobile money, Selcom is strong on cards, and Flutterwave can collect mobile money through its API. Each needs its own merchant onboarding and KYC. We compare them with you and help with the technical setup.

Can we sell to customers outside Tanzania?

Yes. You can display prices in shillings and US dollars, accept international cards through your gateway and set shipping rules by region. Tourism businesses often do this to take deposits from overseas guests before arrival. We make sure overseas buyers see delivery costs and the currency of the charge before they reach the payment step.

Can we use Shopify instead?

You can, but you would still need a Tanzanian payment provider that integrates with it. We work in WooCommerce because you own the shop outright, pay no platform commission and can add any feature later. We are happy to explain the trade-offs honestly.

How do refunds work with mobile money?

Refunds depend on the gateway. Some let you trigger a refund from the dashboard, others need a request to their support team. We document the process for your chosen provider and show your staff how to issue refunds and record them against the order.

What does an ecommerce website cost in Tanzania?

Shops are development projects starting from $5,000. The price depends on product numbers, payment and delivery options and any integrations with stock or accounting systems. You get a full written quote after a scoping call. That quote lists every feature, the gateway work and the timeline, so you can compare it fairly with other offers.

Do we need to register with the PDPC to run a shop?

A shop collects customers' personal data, and DLA Piper's guide to the Act says all data controllers must register with the Personal Data Protection Commission. Your adviser can confirm your position. We provide a summary of what the shop collects and stores to support the application.
