Overview

School Websites for organisations in the United States.

A school website in the USA has several audiences at once: prospective families comparing options, current parents checking calendars and closures, students looking for resources, staff, and the wider community. Each wants different things, and most arrive on a phone. A good school site makes those journeys simple without burying the essentials.

We build school websites on WordPress because it lets office staff and teachers publish news and events without technical help. Our education work includes the Alvina Schools virtual learning environment and BFI School, the online school we built for US company BFI Insights LLC.

In detail

School Websites in the United States, in detail.

01

Admissions, calendars and family news

We structure the site around the tasks families repeat. Admissions pages explain programmes, tuition where relevant, key dates and how to apply, with enquiry or application forms connected to your systems. A calendar shows events, holidays and closures, and can be filtered by campus or grade. News and announcements are easy for staff to post and can be pushed by email to families who opt in. Staff directories and contact routes are clear, so the front office receives fewer phone calls.

02

Accessibility for public and private schools

Public school districts are state and local government bodies, and the Title II rule requires their web content to meet WCAG 2.1 Level A and AA. An interim final rule moved the deadlines to April 2027 for entities serving 50,000 people or more, and April 2028 for smaller ones, and content from private contractors is included. Private schools serve the public too. We build school sites to WCAG 2.1 AA, including calendars, forms and menus, with guidance on accessible PDFs, and we train staff to keep new content accessible.

03

Care with student and child data

Schools that receive federal education funds are covered by FERPA, which generally stops them releasing education records beyond directory information without written parental consent. Sites directed at children under 13 that collect personal information fall under COPPA and usually need verifiable parental consent. We keep student records off the public website, restrict what forms collect, place sensitive tools behind secure logins, and keep tracking scripts off pages aimed at young children. Your school's policies decide what is published; we make the site respect them.

04

Easy for staff to keep current

School websites go stale when only one person can update them. We build a custom block theme with ready-made patterns for news, events, staff profiles and programme pages, and set user roles so teachers, office staff and administrators each see what they need. Training is part of the project, and we leave short written guides. Our team's hours overlap with the US school morning, so questions can be answered during your day.

05

Scope and cost

School website projects usually combine strategy and design, from $1,500, with development, from $5,000, when portals, applications or integrations are involved. Everything is priced in US dollars and scoped in writing. Ongoing hosting and maintenance are available through Managed Services from $2,000 per year, which is helpful for schools without in-house web staff. We can phase the work around the school year, for example launching before admissions open.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do public school websites have to meet WCAG?

Under the Title II rule for state and local government bodies, web content must meet WCAG 2.1 Level A and AA, with compliance dates now in April 2027 or April 2028 depending on the population served. Your district's counsel should confirm how it applies to you; we build to that standard.

How do you protect student information?

We keep education records off the public website and limit what forms collect. Anything sensitive sits behind secure logins with role-based access. FERPA and COPPA obligations are your school's to decide, and we design the site so it can follow your policies.

Can teachers update the website themselves?

Yes. We set up user roles and ready-made page patterns so teachers and office staff can post news, events and pages safely. Training and written guides are included, and support is available through Managed Services. Revisions are saved, so mistakes can be undone.

Can you build a learning platform as well as the website?

Yes. We have built virtual learning environments and online schools on WordPress, including Alvina Schools and BFI School. We can link the public site to a separate learning area with its own login, or plan both together. Single sign-on between them can be scoped where your systems support it.

What does a school website cost?

Strategy and design starts from $1,500, and development from $5,000 when applications, portals or integrations are needed. Hosting and maintenance through Managed Services start from $2,000 per year. All prices are in US dollars and confirmed in a written scope.
