E-learning platforms for Zimbabwean colleges, trainers and schools

Overview

E-learning Platforms for organisations in Zimbabwe.

Training colleges, professional bodies, private tutors and schools in Zimbabwe all have reasons to teach online: learners spread across the country, adults studying around work, and members of the diaspora who want to study with an institution they know. The platform has to cope with mobile data costs, two currencies and a payment landscape where Stripe is not an option.

We use established WordPress learning tools as the base and add custom features where your programme needs them. Our Alvina Schools and BFI School projects cover much of what Zimbabwean institutions ask for.

In detail

E-learning Platforms in Zimbabwe, in detail.

01

Built for learners on mobile data

With mobile internet the main route online in Zimbabwe, every lesson should be usable on a phone without draining a data bundle. We keep pages lean, offer downloadable notes and audio as lighter alternatives to video, and host video so it adapts its quality to the connection. Learner progress saves after each step, so interrupted sessions pick up where they stopped.

02

Fees in US dollars or ZiG

Course fees are often set in US dollars, but some learners may expect to pay in ZiG. We agree the pricing rules with you, then connect enrolment to Paynow so learners can pay by EcoCash, Telecash, ZimSwitch or card. Once Paynow confirms the payment, the learner is enrolled and receives login details by email, without anyone checking receipts by hand.

03

Assessments and certificates

Quizzes can be marked automatically, with question banks so each attempt differs. For essay or project work, facilitators get a grading screen with space for comments. When a learner meets your completion rules, a certificate is generated with a unique code that employers can verify on your site. The BFI School platform we built issues certificates in exactly this way.

04

Learner records and your POTRAZ licence

Learner names, contact details, results and payments are personal data under the Cyber and Data Protection Act. The institution running the platform needs a POTRAZ data controller licence and a data protection officer, and the licence application asks where data is stored. We document that for you, restrict access to results by role, and set clear rules for how long records are kept.

05

Reporting for management and funders

Programme managers need to know who enrolled, who is progressing and who has dropped off. We build reports on enrolment, completion and assessment by course and cohort, with exports for donors, boards or accreditation bodies. Facilitators see only their own groups, while administrators see the whole programme and can follow up with learners who stall before they drop out altogether.

Our work

Platforms we have built.

BFI School, with its online courses, multi-currency payments and certificates, and the Alvina Schools virtual learning environment are the two education platforms our team has built that most closely match Zimbabwean requirements.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why not use a free LMS or Google Classroom?

Free tools work well for teaching a class you already have. They are less suited to selling courses, issuing branded certificates, taking EcoCash payments or reporting to funders. A WordPress platform does all of that under your own domain, with data you control. We explain the trade-offs before you commit.

Can learners outside Zimbabwe pay?

Paynow lists Visa and Mastercard alongside local methods. During setup we confirm with Paynow whether your merchant account accepts cards issued abroad, then test it before launch. We also agree with you which currencies to display so international learners see a clear price.

How many learners can the platform handle?

That depends mostly on hosting rather than WordPress itself. Our managed hosting through Cloudways or Hostinger can be sized to your expected numbers and increased later. We test performance before major intakes so a busy enrolment day does not slow the site down.

Can courses work offline?

Partly. Learners can download notes, worksheets and audio to study without a connection, then go online to take quizzes and record progress. Full offline apps are a different kind of project; for most programmes, downloadable materials are a practical middle ground that keeps data costs down.

Do we need a data protection officer for an e-learning platform?

Under the 2024 regulations, an organisation that controls personal data is expected to hold a POTRAZ licence and appoint a data protection officer, and learner records count. We give your officer a clear description of the platform's data. Please confirm the legal detail with POTRAZ or an adviser.

How does a platform project start?

With a discovery call about your courses, learners, fees and reporting needs. We then send a written scope with stages, dates and a US dollar price. After approval, we build a first course with you as a template, and your team uses it to load the rest.
