Website design for Rwandan organisations, planned for the phone first

Overview

Website Design for organisations in Rwanda.

Good design for a Rwandan audience starts with practical questions. Which language will most visitors read first? Will they arrive from a WhatsApp link on a mobile connection? Do they need to pay, register or simply call you? We answer those before drawing a single screen.

Our design work covers discovery, page structure, visual design and a clickable prototype, followed by a build your team can edit without code. We also redesign existing sites that have grown hard to manage.

In detail

Website Design in Rwanda, in detail.

01

Language comes first, not last

Many Rwandan organisations publish in Kinyarwanda, English and French, sometimes all three. Language changes design: French and Kinyarwanda headlines often run longer than English ones, menus need room to breathe, and buttons must still read clearly at phone width. We agree the language plan during discovery, decide which content needs every version and which does not, and design layouts that hold up in each. It saves an expensive rebuild when the second language arrives six months after launch.

02

Designing for a checkout that ends on a phone

If your site takes payments, the design has to account for how Rwandans pay. With MTN MoMo or Airtel Money through a gateway such as IremboPay, the customer often leaves your page to approve the payment on their handset. We design for that moment: a clear instruction before the prompt, a waiting state that does not look broken, and a confirmation page that shows the amount in Rwandan francs with a reference the customer can screenshot.

03

Forms that respect Rwanda's data law

Every enquiry or registration form collects personal data, and Law No. 058/2021 asks organisations to explain why. During design we strip forms back to the fields you genuinely use, place short consent statements where people decide, and link a privacy notice that names your organisation as data controller. Fewer fields also mean faster completion on mobile, so the compliance work and the conversion work point in the same direction.

04

How we run design reviews from Nigeria

Kigali sits one hour ahead of our team, so review sessions fit comfortably into a normal working day for both of us. We share designs as live prototypes you can open on your own phone, collect comments in one place, and summarise decisions in writing after every call. Your stakeholders can review in their own time, which matters when a board or a ministry partner needs to sign off.

Our Alvina Schools learning environment and the BFI online school show how we design for students and parents who mostly arrive on phones, which is the audience many Rwandan schools and training providers serve.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does website design cost in Rwanda?

Our Strategy and Design work starts from $1,500 per project. The final figure depends on the number of page types, language versions, and whether the site includes payments or member areas. We send a written scope with a fixed price before work starts, so there are no surprises once design is under way.

Can you design in Kinyarwanda?

We design the layouts and structure to suit Kinyarwanda, English and French, and test them with real text rather than placeholders. The translation itself comes from you or a translator you trust, because the wording should be in a voice your audience recognises. We can recommend how to organise that work.

Can you redesign our current website instead of starting over?

Yes. We review what already works, such as pages that rank or forms that convert, and keep it. Then we redesign the structure and look around it. If your current site is not on WordPress, we can plan a migration as part of the same scope.

How do design reviews work if you are not in Kigali?

We send live prototypes you open on your phone or laptop, then hold a video call to walk through them. Because we are only one hour behind Kigali, these calls fit easily into your working day. Feedback is gathered in one place and every decision is confirmed in writing.

Will the design work on cheap Android phones?

That is where we test first. We check layouts on smaller screens, keep images light and avoid effects that slow older devices. A site that feels quick on a modest phone on mobile data will feel quick everywhere else too.
