Ecommerce websites for Rwanda, with mobile money at the checkout

We build WooCommerce shops where Rwandan customers can browse on a phone and pay with MTN MoMo, Airtel Money or a card. Prices show in Rwandan francs, and your team manages products and orders without a developer.

Overview

Ecommerce Websites for organisations in Rwanda.

An online shop in Rwanda succeeds or fails at the payment step. If a shopper cannot pay the way they normally pay, they message you on WhatsApp instead, or leave. We build around that reality, starting with the gateway and working outwards to the catalogue, delivery options and order emails.

WooCommerce gives you a shop you own outright, with no platform taking a share of each sale and full control over how products, stock and customers are managed.

In detail

Ecommerce Websites in Rwanda, in detail.

01

Choosing a Rwandan payment gateway

The gateway decides which payment methods appear at your checkout. IremboPay accepts MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, Visa, Mastercard and American Express, and bank transfers from Rwandan banks, in RWF, USD, EUR and GBP. Flutterwave lists card and Rwanda mobile money in RWF. Stripe is not available to Rwandan businesses, which rules out many plugins built for other markets. We compare the options with you, then you open the merchant account in your company's name and we connect it.

02

A checkout that expects a phone prompt

Mobile money checkout works differently from card checkout. The shopper enters a number, a payment request arrives on their phone, and they approve it with their PIN. We design the order page to explain that step, keep the order on hold while the request is pending, and update it automatically when the gateway confirms. Customers receive an order email and, where you choose, an SMS or WhatsApp follow-up from your own tools.

03

Customer data and the 2021 law

Every order holds a name, phone number and delivery address, which makes your shop a data controller under Law No. 058/2021. We keep checkout fields to what fulfilment needs, add clear consent for marketing messages, and plan where order data is stored, since the law's default is storage in Rwanda. We also set up admin roles so packing staff see delivery details without access to the full customer list.

04

VAT and pricing in Rwandan francs

Shoppers trust prices in their own currency, so we set your catalogue in Rwandan francs and configure tax settings to match how your accountant advises you to charge VAT. If you also sell to visitors abroad, your gateway may let you take USD, EUR or GBP. We set up the reports your finance team needs, so monthly totals are easy to reconcile against gateway settlements.

05

Delivery across Kigali and beyond

Delivery options shape the checkout as much as payment does. We can set zones with different fees, offer collection from your shop, and let you mark orders as dispatched so customers receive an update. If you work with a courier, we look at whether their system can receive orders directly to save manual copying. Customers outside Kigali, in Huye, Musanze or Rubavu, can see their delivery fee before they pay, so there are no surprises at the final step.

The BFI online school takes payments in four currencies and the Technext ticketing system processed more than 10,000 tickets, so both reflect the payment handling a Rwandan shop needs.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can customers pay with MoMo on my online shop?

Yes. Through gateways such as IremboPay or Flutterwave, customers can pay with MTN MoMo, and IremboPay also accepts Airtel Money. They enter their number, approve the request on their phone, and the order updates once the gateway confirms the payment.

Can I use Stripe for my Rwandan shop?

Not directly. Rwanda is not on Stripe's list of supported countries, so a business registered in Rwanda cannot open a Stripe account. Local and regional gateways such as IremboPay and Flutterwave cover cards as well as mobile money, which is why we usually start there.

How much does an ecommerce website cost?

Shops are development projects, which start from $5,000. The price depends on the size of your catalogue, the number of payment and delivery options, and any integrations with stock or accounting systems. We confirm a fixed price in a written scope before work starts.

Do gateways charge fees?

Yes, payment providers charge their own transaction fees, and these vary by provider and method. Those fees are set by the gateway, not by us, so check the current rates in your merchant agreement and build them into your pricing.

Can I manage products myself after launch?

Yes. We train your team to add products, change prices, manage stock and process refunds. Most shop owners handle day-to-day changes themselves and call us only for new features or larger updates. We also leave you short written guides for the tasks your staff perform most often.

Do I need to register with the NCSA to run a shop?

An online shop collects personal data with every order, so Law No. 058/2021 expects you to register with the National Cyber Security Authority as a data controller. We document what the shop collects to support your registration, but the filing itself is yours.
