Website design for Kenya, planned for phones first

We design WordPress websites that make sense to Kenyan visitors on a phone, on a data bundle, ready to pay by M-Pesa. Design work starts from $1,500 per project and is always scoped in writing.

Overview

Website Design for organisations in Kenya.

A good design is a set of decisions about who visits, what they need and what you want them to do next. In Kenya, those decisions start with the handset. We plan layouts, navigation and calls to action for a small screen before we stretch them to a desktop.

Our Strategy and Design service covers discovery, new website design, redesigns, landing pages and portals or dashboards. We hand over designs that our developers then build in WordPress, so nothing gets lost between the mock-up and the live site.

In detail

Website Design in Kenya, in detail.

01

Discovery before pixels

We begin by asking what the site must achieve: enquiries, admissions, donations, bookings or sales. We look at who your visitors are, which devices they use and what they search for. For a Nairobi professional services firm the priority may be trust and a fast contact route; for a Mombasa tour operator it may be availability and a deposit. The output is a sitemap, page priorities and a content plan that everyone has agreed in writing.

02

Designing for data bundles

Many Kenyan visitors browse on prepaid mobile data, so every heavy image and autoplaying video has a real cost to them. We use system and web fonts carefully, size images for the screen they appear on, and keep each page's purpose clear within the first scroll. A page that loads quickly on a mid-range Android phone is a page more people finish reading.

03

Journeys that end in M-Pesa

If a visitor is going to pay, the design has to make that moment easy. We place the phone number field and payment step where a Kenyan buyer expects them, explain the prompt that will appear on their handset, and design clear confirmation and failure screens. Whether payment runs through Paystack, Flutterwave, Pesapal or Safaricom's Daraja API, the visitor sees one calm, consistent journey.

04

Forms that respect the Data Protection Act

Contact, enquiry and application forms collect personal data, which brings them under Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019. We design forms that ask only for what you need, show consent wording at the point of collection and link to a privacy notice your lawyer has approved. Designing this in from the start is far easier than retrofitting it after a complaint to the ODPC.

05

Pages your team can keep up to date

A design only stays good if the people who update it can work within it. We design a small set of reusable blocks and page patterns in the WordPress editor, so your communications officer can publish a news item or a new programme page without breaking the layout. Admissions season, a product launch or a fundraising drive should not mean waiting for an agency to add a page.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you redesign our existing Kenyan website?

Yes. Redesigns are part of our Strategy and Design service. We review what works on your current site, keep the pages and links that bring traffic, and redesign around the goals we agree in discovery. If your site is not on WordPress, our Migrations service can move it across during the rebuild.

Will the design work on cheaper Android phones?

That is where we test first. We review designs on mid-range Android handsets and slower connections, not only on a laptop. Layouts, buttons and text are sized for thumbs and small screens, and we keep pages light so they are kind to visitors' data bundles.

Do you design in Kenyan shillings for prices?

Yes, any prices shown to your visitors are designed in KES, or in KES and USD if you sell to visitors outside Kenya. The payment gateway then charges in the currency you have set up, and our designs make that clear before the customer approves an M-Pesa prompt.

How long does a design project take?

It depends on the number of templates and how quickly feedback comes back, so we set the timeline in the written scope rather than quoting a standard figure. Because we are only two hours behind Nairobi, review calls fit comfortably into your working day.

What do you need from us to start?

Your goals, your brand assets if you have them, access to any current site and analytics, and one person on your side who can approve decisions. We guide the rest through a short discovery call and a written brief, and we will tell you early if anything is missing.
