Ecommerce websites for Kenya, with M-Pesa at the till

We build WooCommerce shops for Kenyan sellers where paying by phone is the normal path, not an afterthought. Every shop is scoped in writing, with development starting from $5,000 per project.

Overview

Ecommerce Websites for organisations in Kenya.

Online shoppers in Kenya expect to type a phone number, approve a prompt and get an order confirmation within moments. If the checkout asks for a card first, many will simply leave.

WooCommerce gives you a shop you own outright, on your own .co.ke domain, with no platform taking a slice of every sale beyond your payment gateway's fees. We set it up so products, stock, payments and deliveries tie together cleanly.

In detail

Ecommerce Websites in Kenya, in detail.

01

Choosing the payment mix

Paystack is live for Kenyan businesses with cards, M-Pesa and Apple Pay, offers a WooCommerce integration and settles in KES or USD to a bank account or M-Pesa wallet. Flutterwave collects M-Pesa in shillings, and Pesapal, regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya, accepts M-Pesa and Visa or Mastercard. For shops with their own Till or Paybill, Safaricom's Daraja API is an option. We compare fees and settlement on your behalf before you commit.

02

Checkout behaviour on a phone

An M-Pesa checkout has moments a card checkout does not. The customer leaves your page to approve a prompt, may miss it, or may lack funds. We design for each case: clear instructions before the prompt, a waiting screen that confirms automatically, and a simple retry if the prompt times out. Orders only move to paid when the gateway confirms, so stock and dispatch stay accurate.

03

Limits and high-value orders

Payment channels have ceilings. Paystack's M-Pesa channel, for example, follows Safaricom's limit of KES 150,000 per transaction and does not support recurring payments. If you sell furniture, electronics or school fees above that line, or want subscriptions, we add card payment or bank options and design the checkout to offer them when the basket total calls for it.

04

Customer data and the ODPC

A shop collects names, phone numbers and delivery addresses, so the Data Protection Act, 2019 applies to every order. We keep stored data to what fulfilment needs, rely on the gateway for card details, add clear consent for marketing messages and secure the admin area. A breach must be reported to the Data Commissioner within 72 hours, so we set up monitoring that gives early warning.

05

Delivery and fulfilment

Payment is only half the order. We set up delivery zones and rates for the areas you serve, pickup points if you use them, and order statuses your dispatch team can update from a phone. Customers receive clear updates at each stage, which cuts the calls asking where a parcel is. If you use a courier with an API, we can connect it so tracking details flow into the order automatically.

Platforms we have built.

Two builds carry the most weight for a Kenyan shop: an online school taking payments in four currencies, and an events platform that sold and scanned over 10,000 tickets.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What does an ecommerce website cost in Kenya?

It depends on the number of products, payment and delivery options, and any integrations such as stock or accounting systems. Development starts from $5,000 per project. We give you a full written price after a short scoping conversation, so you are not comparing against a guess.

Can customers pay with M-Pesa and get an automatic receipt?

Yes. When the gateway or Daraja confirms payment, WooCommerce marks the order as paid and sends the customer a confirmation by email, and by SMS if you add an SMS provider. Your team sees the same status in the dashboard.

How do refunds work with M-Pesa?

It depends on the route. With Paystack, refunds on M-Pesa payments are requested through Paystack support and paid back to the customer's M-Pesa account. Other gateways and direct Daraja setups handle refunds differently, and we document the process for your team at handover.

Can we sell to customers outside Kenya?

Yes. You can show prices in KES and USD, accept cards from abroad through your gateway and set shipping rules by region. Paystack can settle you in KES or USD, which helps if you also pay suppliers in dollars. We set tax and shipping display so overseas buyers see the full cost early.

Do we need a .co.ke domain?

It is not required, but KeNIC lists .co.ke for commercial ventures and Kenyan shoppers recognise it as local. We can set up your shop on .co.ke, the shorter .ke, or a .com, and redirect the others to whichever you choose as the main address.
