School websites for Kenya that parents can use on a phone

A Kenyan school website has to answer parents quickly: admissions, fees, term dates and who to call. We design and build them on WordPress, with pupil data handled carefully under the Data Protection Act, 2019.

Overview

School Websites for organisations in Kenya.

Parents rarely visit a school website for pleasure. They come to check an admission requirement, find a fee structure, confirm when term opens or download a uniform list, often on a phone in a matatu or between meetings. A good school site gets them there in two taps.

We build school websites for nursery, primary and secondary schools, colleges and training institutions. Design work starts from $1,500 per project; portals with logins, fee payment or online lessons sit in our Development service, from $5,000.

In detail

School Websites in Kenya, in detail.

01

Admissions that turn interest into applications

The admissions section is usually the busiest part of a school site. We set out entry requirements, the steps to apply and key dates clearly, then offer an online application or enquiry form that sends each submission to the right office. Where you charge an application fee, it can be paid by M-Pesa at the same point, with an automatic receipt, instead of a Paybill number and a request to send a screenshot.

02

Fees, calendars and news staff can update

Fee structures, term dates, circulars and event photos change constantly, so the school's own staff must be able to update them. We build simple templates for each: a fee page with downloadable schedules, a term calendar, a news feed for announcements and a gallery for events. A secretary or the teacher in charge of communications can publish without touching the design or calling us.

03

A .sc.ke or .ac.ke domain

KeNIC reserves .sc.ke for kindergartens, primary and secondary schools and .ac.ke for higher education. A .sc.ke registration needs the school's Ministry of Education certificate of registration, and .ac.ke needs a charter, Act or certificate, all checked before the domain is published. We help gather the documents and build that check into the launch plan, so the website and staff email go live together.

04

Pupil data and parental consent

Schools hold some of the most sensitive data a website can touch. Section 33 of Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019 requires a parent's or guardian's consent before a child's personal data is processed, and the ODPC has already found schools in breach for publishing pupils' photographs without proven consent. We build galleries and news posts with that in mind, keep application data out of public view and restrict access by staff role.

05

Where some data must stay in Kenya

Most school websites can be hosted wherever performance is best. However, the 2021 General Regulations list processing on grounds of strategic state interest that must run on a server or data centre in Kenya, or keep a serving copy there. If your project involves records or systems that may fall into that group, we flag it during scoping and plan the hosting accordingly, with your legal adviser confirming the position.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What should a Kenyan school website include?

At minimum: admissions information and a way to apply or enquire, fee structures, term dates, contact details with a map, and news. Many schools add a gallery, staff directory, downloadable circulars and an alumni page. We agree the list in discovery based on what parents actually ask your office for.

Can parents pay school fees through the website?

Yes. We connect fee payments to M-Pesa and cards through a gateway such as Paystack, Flutterwave or Pesapal, or directly to your school's Paybill through Safaricom's Daraja API. Paystack's M-Pesa channel caps a single payment at KES 150,000, so larger fee balances may need a card or bank option.

Can we publish photos of pupils?

Only with care. The Data Protection Act, 2019 requires parental or guardian consent before a child's personal data, including images, is processed. We build galleries that work alongside your consent records, and we recommend asking a lawyer to review your consent forms.

How do we get a .sc.ke domain?

Through a KeNIC-accredited registrar, with your Ministry of Education certificate of registration. KeNIC checks the documents before the domain is published, so we plan for that step. The domain should be registered in the school's name, not a staff member's.

Do you build learning portals for schools too?

Yes. Beyond the public website we can add a learning area with lessons, assignments and quizzes, similar to the virtual learning environment our team built for Alvina Schools in Nigeria. That work falls under Development, starting from $5,000 per project.

Who updates the site after launch?

Your staff, with our training. We build templates so news, calendars and fee notices take minutes to post. If you would rather we handle updates, security and backups, a Managed Services plan starts from $2,000 per year and covers the routine work.
