Web application development in Kenya, built on WordPress

Portals, internal workflows and dashboards do not always need bespoke software from scratch. We build web applications on WordPress for Kenyan organisations, from $5,000 per project, scoped in writing.

Overview

Web Application Development for organisations in Kenya.

Many Kenyan organisations run important processes on spreadsheets, WhatsApp groups and email chains: loan applications, supplier onboarding, member renewals, field reports. It works until volume grows and nobody can see the status of anything.

A web application gives that process a home: forms that feed a database, roles that control who sees what, and dashboards that answer questions instantly. Building it on WordPress means you get a proven user system, admin and security layer from day one, and we spend your budget on the logic that is unique to you.

In detail

Web Application Development in Kenya, in detail.

01

When WordPress is the right base, and when it is not

WordPress suits applications built around users, content, forms, approvals and payments, which covers most portals and internal tools. It is not the right base for everything: real-time trading systems or heavy data processing belong elsewhere. We tell you honestly at the scoping stage. When WordPress fits, it shortens the build and gives you a platform that many developers in Kenya already know how to maintain.

02

Workflows modelled on your process

We map the process before writing code: who submits, who reviews, what happens on approval or rejection, and which notifications go out at each stage. Then we build it with custom post types, statuses and role-based screens. For ASEP Logistics our team turned recruitment into exactly this kind of pipeline, with an HR dashboard that shows where every applicant stands.

03

Payments inside the workflow

In Kenya a workflow often includes a payment: an application fee, a membership renewal, a deposit on a booking. We attach M-Pesa collection to the right step, using a gateway or Safaricom's Daraja API, so a record only moves forward when payment is confirmed. Callback logs and reference numbers make reconciliation against your M-Pesa statements straightforward for the finance team.

04

Dashboards and reports

Managers want answers, not exports. We build dashboards that show the numbers your team checks every week: applications by stage, payments received, overdue tasks, activity by region. Data can be filtered and exported to CSV for your accountants. For Technext Events our team built ticketing that sold and scanned more than 10,000 tickets with QR check-in, giving organisers live counts on the day.

05

Security and compliance from the first sprint

Applications concentrate personal data, which makes them valuable to attackers and of direct interest to the ODPC. We enforce strong passwords and two-factor sign-in for staff, limit each role to the data it needs, log sensitive actions and encrypt connections. Where an application handles processing that the 2021 regulations require to happen in Kenya, we plan in-country hosting from the start rather than retrofitting it.

Platforms we have built.

Three of our builds show web applications on WordPress at work: the ASEP Logistics recruitment portal, the Technext Events ticketing system and the boot camp registration platform for Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Education with PLANE-FCDO.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is WordPress secure enough for a web application?

Yes, when it is built and maintained properly. Most WordPress security problems come from outdated plugins and weak passwords, not the core. We keep plugins to a minimum, write custom code to WordPress security standards, enforce two-factor sign-in for staff and maintain the system after launch.

Can the application connect to our existing systems?

Usually. We integrate with accounting packages, CRMs, SMS gateways, Safaricom's Daraja API and other services through their APIs. Where a system has no API, we look at scheduled file exchange instead. The integrations are listed and priced in the written scope.

How much does custom web application development cost?

Our Development service starts from $5,000 per project, priced in US dollars. The final figure depends on the number of user roles, workflow steps, integrations and reports. We set it out in a written scope after a discovery session, with milestones tied to working features.

Can we start with a smaller first version?

We recommend it. A first release covering the core workflow gets the tool into your team's hands sooner, and real use shows what the next phase should include. We design the data structure so later features fit in without rebuilding what already works.

Who supports the application once it is live?

We can, under a Managed Services plan from $2,000 per year covering updates, security, backups and small improvements. Or your own developers can take over using our documentation. Either way, you own the code, the data and the hosting account.

Will staff in different Kenyan offices be able to use it?

Yes. It is a web application, so staff use it from a browser on a laptop or phone wherever they are. We test screens on mobile, since field staff often work from phones, and keep pages light for slower connections.
