How much does a website cost in Kenya?

Quoted prices for websites in Kenya range so widely that they are hard to compare. This guide explains what actually drives the cost, which running costs to budget for, and where our own prices start.

Overview

The short answer, and the honest one.

Search for website design prices in Kenya and you will see offers that differ by a factor of ten or more for what sounds like the same thing. Usually they are not the same thing. One quote is for a template with your logo swapped in; another includes discovery, custom design, payment integration, training and a year of care.

We will not give you an average figure, because any average hides the decisions that matter. Instead, here is how to break a website into its parts, so you can price your own and compare quotes fairly.

In detail

What drives the cost.

01

What drives the price of a website

Five things move the cost more than anything else. First, the number of unique page templates, not the number of pages. Second, functionality: payments, bookings, member areas and integrations add development time. Third, content: who writes it, and whether it needs translating into Swahili. Fourth, design: adapting a theme costs less than designing from a blank page. Fifth, the level of ongoing care you need after launch. Get clear on these and quotes start to make sense.

02

Brochure and company websites

A company site presents who you are, what you do and how to reach you. The work is mostly discovery, design, content and a well-built WordPress theme, with forms that respect the Data Protection Act, 2019. This is the lightest kind of project and sits within our Strategy and Design service, which starts from $1,500 per project. Costs rise with more templates, more languages or custom features.

03

Ecommerce, portals and learning platforms

Once a site takes M-Pesa payments, manages stock, enrols students or runs a recruitment pipeline, it becomes software. Development involves payment gateways or Safaricom's Daraja API, user roles, dashboards, emails and careful testing. Our Development service starts from $5,000 per project for this reason. A Kenyan school portal, an online shop and a membership body may all fall in this group, yet each differs in scope.

04

Moving an existing site

If you already have a website on another platform or host, moving it is a project in its own right. Content, images, links and search rankings all need carrying across, along with form entries and orders where they matter. Our Migrations service starts from $1,000 per migration. A move is often the right moment to tidy up content and drop plugins you no longer use, which reduces running costs later.

05

Running costs to budget for

A website keeps costing money after launch, and a fair quote should say so. Budget for annual renewal of your .co.ke or .ke domain through a KeNIC-accredited registrar; hosting, which ranges from basic shared plans to managed servers; payment gateway fees on each M-Pesa or card transaction, set by Paystack, Flutterwave, Pesapal or Safaricom; business email per mailbox; and maintenance. Check each provider's current price list, as these change.

06

Getting an accurate quote

The quickest route to a reliable figure is a short brief: what the site must do, who it serves, which payments it takes, what content exists and when you need it. With that, we send a written scope with deliverables, timeline and a fixed price in US dollars. If another agency's quote is lower, compare the scopes line by line; the difference is usually explained there.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why do website quotes in Kenya vary so much?

Because they rarely describe the same work. A low quote may cover a pre-made template, no content help, no payment integration and no support after launch. A higher quote may include discovery, custom design, M-Pesa checkout, training and maintenance. Ask every agency for a written scope and compare those, not just the totals.

Why are your prices in US dollars?

We work with clients in Africa, the UK and the USA, so we price consistently in dollars. Our starting points are $1,500 for Strategy and Design, $5,000 for Development, $1,000 per migration and $2,000 per year for Managed Services. If you need a shilling reference figure for internal budgeting, ask when we scope.

How much is a .co.ke domain?

Domain prices are set by each KeNIC-accredited registrar, so they vary and change over time. Check current prices with registrars directly. Remember to budget for renewal every year, and register the domain in your organisation's name so you keep control of it.

Are M-Pesa payment fees part of the website cost?

No. Transaction fees are charged by your payment gateway or by Safaricom, and they are deducted per payment rather than paid to us. Compare the published fees of Paystack, Flutterwave, Pesapal or a direct Daraja setup, and factor them into your pricing.

Can we start small and add features later?

Yes, and it is often sensible. We can launch a well-built core site first and add a shop, member area or learning platform in a later phase. We plan the first build so later additions do not mean starting again.

How do we get a price for our project?

Send us a short description of what the site must do and who it is for. We arrange a discovery call, then send a written scope with deliverables, timeline and price. You decide only once you have seen it, with time to ask questions before you commit.
