WooCommerce, Uganda

Ecommerce websites in Uganda with a checkout people can actually use

An online shop in Uganda succeeds or fails at checkout. We build WooCommerce stores priced in shillings, with MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money and card payments, designed for shoppers on their phones.

Overview

Ecommerce Websites for organisations in Uganda.

Plenty of Ugandan online shops lose sales at the last step: the customer reaches checkout, sees only a card form and leaves to send a WhatsApp message instead. That might still end in a sale, but you lose the order record, the stock update and the follow-up email.

We build WooCommerce stores where mobile money is the first payment option shown, product pages are light enough for bundle data, and order management fits how your team packs and delivers.

In detail

Ecommerce Websites in Uganda, in detail.

01

Mobile money at the centre of checkout

Both MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money can be accepted in a WooCommerce store through gateways that support Ugandan shillings. Flutterwave prompts the shopper to approve the payment on their handset; Pesapal provides an official WooCommerce plugin that also covers Visa, Mastercard and American Express. We configure the gateway, test each network in sandbox, and make sure an order only moves to processing once the gateway confirms the funds.

02

Pricing, stock and delivery in Ugandan terms

Prices display in UGX without decimal clutter, delivery options reflect how you actually fulfil orders, whether that is boda boda delivery within Kampala, a courier upcountry or collection from your shop, and stock levels update as orders come in. Cash on delivery can stay available where you want it, so you can see in your reports how customers prefer to pay.

03

Customer data and the PDPO

An online store stores names, phone numbers and delivery addresses, all personal data under the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019. We keep guest checkout available, ask for consent before adding customers to marketing lists, and restrict which staff can see order details. That supports your registration with the Personal Data Protection Office and reduces the risk if anything goes wrong.

04

Selling digital products and courses

If you sell courses, subscriptions or downloads, ecommerce overlaps with learning platforms. Our team built BFI School to take payments in NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with certificates and affiliates. If you work with foreign suppliers of digital services, note that the Uganda Revenue Authority expects non-resident digital service providers to register for VAT, which can affect how partner platforms bill you.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Which payment gateway should a Ugandan online shop use?

It depends on your products, volumes and the fees each provider quotes you. Flutterwave and Pesapal both support MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money and cards in shillings. We compare their current terms with you during scoping and integrate the one that fits, rather than defaulting to a favourite.

What happens if a mobile money payment does not go through?

The order stays pending and the customer sees a clear message with the option to try again or switch network. Callbacks from the gateway are logged, so if a payment arrives late your team can see exactly what happened and the order updates without manual guesswork.

Can I still offer cash on delivery?

Yes. WooCommerce supports cash on delivery alongside online payments, and you can limit it to certain delivery zones. Many shops keep it while customers get used to paying online, then review the reports to see how buying habits change. We can also add a deposit option.

Will the shop work on cheaper smartphones?

We build and test for that. Product images are compressed, pages avoid heavy scripts and checkout fields are kept short. Since Ugandans pay an excise duty on data on top of bundle prices, a lighter store is simply more considerate and more likely to convert.

What does an ecommerce build cost?

A WooCommerce store with payment integration is a development project, starting from $5,000, scoped in writing. Catalogue size, integrations with stock or accounting systems and custom features move the price. Our Uganda cost guide explains the running costs to budget for as well.
