01What really drives the price
Four factors account for most of the difference between quotes. First, functionality: a site that takes payments, applications or logins needs development and testing that an information site does not. Second, design: a theme with your logo costs less than a design built around your audience and content. Third, content: someone has to write, photograph and organise it. Fourth, integrations: linking to mobile money, accounts software or a CRM adds work. Page count matters far less than people expect.
02Kinds of website and what each involves
A brochure site presents your organisation, services and contact details, and mainly needs good design and clear writing. A content or news site adds publishing workflows and search visibility. An online store needs product setup, checkout, delivery rules and payment testing. A portal, learning platform or membership site adds user accounts, permissions and often certificates or dashboards. Each step up adds planning, building and testing time, which is why a portal costs considerably more than a brochure site.
03Payments add value and cost
In Zambia, taking money online usually means offering mobile money. Flutterwave collects kwacha from MTN, Airtel and Zamtel wallets, and gateways such as DPO Pay handle cards through local banks. Integrating these properly, including confirmation webhooks, refunds and test transactions, is real development work. After launch, each provider charges transaction fees under its own pricing, so budget a percentage of sales for payment costs and compare providers before you sign up.
04Compliance is part of the budget
Zambia's Data Protection Act 2021 requires organisations that control or process personal data to register with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner, and it sets a default that personal data is stored in Zambia. A quote that ignores this may look cheaper but leave you exposed. Budget for consent-led forms, a privacy notice, data minimisation, and possibly hosting in Zambia or legal advice on transfers. If you sell digital services, factor in VAT obligations too.
05Running costs to plan for every year
Building the site is only the first cost. Each year you will pay to renew your domain, whether a .co.zm address or a .com; for hosting, which ranges from shared plans to managed servers; for business email per mailbox; for any premium plugin licences; and for payment provider fees on sales. Then there is maintenance: updates, backups and security, done by your team or a provider. Ask any agency to list these separately so there are no surprises in year two.
06Where our prices sit
Our starting prices are in USD and every engagement is scoped in writing. Strategy and design projects start from $1,500. Development projects, including most online stores, portals and learning platforms, start from $5,000. Migrations from another platform or host start from $1,000. Managed services, covering hosting through Cloudways or Hostinger, maintenance and security, start from $2,000 a year. We can show a kwacha equivalent on proposals for internal approvals.
