Ecommerce in Zambia

WooCommerce stores built for how Zambia pays

An online shop in Zambia succeeds or fails at checkout. We build WooCommerce stores where customers can pay by mobile money or card in kwacha, and where every order is confirmed reliably.

Overview

Ecommerce Websites for organisations in Zambia.

Selling online in Zambia is not the same as selling in a market where nearly everyone pays by card. Many shoppers expect to approve a payment on their phone through MTN MoMo, Airtel Money or Zamtel, and plenty still want to ask a question on WhatsApp before buying. A store that ignores this loses sales at the final step.

We are a WordPress and WooCommerce team based in Nigeria. We have not yet launched a Zambian store, so we show ecommerce and payment work we have delivered elsewhere and explain how we would apply it to your products and customers.

In detail

Ecommerce Websites in Zambia, in detail.

01

Mobile money at the centre of checkout

Flutterwave lets a Zambian merchant collect kwacha from all three mobile networks. At checkout the customer chooses their network, enters their number and approves a prompt on their phone; the store then waits for Flutterwave's confirmation before marking the order paid. We design that waiting moment carefully, with clear instructions and a status message, because shoppers who are unsure whether a payment worked tend to try again or give up. We test each network with live low-value transactions before launch.

02

Cards and other options

Card buyers, including visitors paying from abroad, need a smooth route too. DPO Pay is available in Zambia with local acquiring banks, and Flutterwave can also process cards. We help you choose providers based on fees, settlement times and which methods your customers use, then integrate them so that refunds, partial payments and failed attempts are handled correctly in WooCommerce. Cash on delivery or bank transfer can be offered alongside, with clear order states for staff.

03

Customer accounts and the Data Protection Act

Every account, delivery address and phone number in your store is personal data under Zambia's Data Protection Act 2021. Businesses processing it are expected to register with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner. We configure WooCommerce to ask only for what fulfilment needs, offer guest checkout, set sensible data retention, and limit which staff can export customer lists. We also flag the Act's local storage default when choosing hosting, so you can take advice before going live.

04

Selling digital products and subscriptions

If you sell courses, downloads or memberships, WooCommerce can deliver them automatically and renew subscriptions. Tax rules matter here: since 2024, non-resident suppliers of electronic services to people in Zambia must register with the Zambia Revenue Authority and charge VAT. Local businesses have their own VAT position. We set up tax settings to match the advice of your accountant rather than guessing, and make invoices show what your customers need.

05

Operations after the sale

A store is also a back office. We set up stock levels, order notifications by email or SMS, delivery zones and fees for Lusaka, the Copperbelt and beyond if you deliver there, and simple reports for daily reconciliation against your payment provider. Staff get training on processing orders and refunds, so the store does not depend on us for routine work.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can customers pay with MTN MoMo or Airtel Money on my store?

Yes. Using Flutterwave, a WooCommerce store can accept MTN, Airtel and Zamtel mobile money in kwacha. Mobile money is available by default to Zambian merchants on Flutterwave, so you will need an account registered to your business. We handle the integration, the order confirmation logic and the testing.

How much does an ecommerce website cost in Zambia?

Most stores fall under our development work, which starts from $5,000, because payment integration, product setup and testing are substantial. A smaller catalogue with standard features may cost less than a complex store with subscriptions or custom delivery rules. We price every store in a written scope after discovery.

How quickly do I receive the money from sales?

Settlement depends on your payment provider and your agreement with it, not on WordPress. Flutterwave, DPO Pay and other gateways each set their own timings and fees. We help you compare them during discovery so you know what to expect before launch.

Do I need a .co.zm domain for an online shop?

It is not required, but a .co.zm address tells Zambian shoppers they are buying from a local business. Registration needs a presence in Zambia and should be in your company's name. Many stores register both a .co.zm and a .com and redirect one to the other.

Can you add WhatsApp ordering?

Yes. We can add a WhatsApp button on product pages so customers can ask questions, and link order confirmations to a WhatsApp business number. The order itself still goes through WooCommerce so stock levels, payment records and delivery details stay accurate, and your staff are not reconciling chat messages against the shop at the end of each day.

Can you move my existing store to WooCommerce?

Yes. Migrations start from $1,000. We move products, customers and order history where the old platform allows export, set up redirects to keep search visibility, and run the new store alongside the old one until you are confident that orders, payments and emails all behave correctly.
