Overview

Web Hosting for organisations in Malawi.

Searches for web hosting companies in Malawi usually begin with price per month. The more useful questions come later: who restores the site when it breaks, who renews the domain, and whether the server can cope with a busy enrolment week. Cheap shared hosting answers none of these well, especially for shops, schools and portals.

We do not run our own data centre. We provide managed hosting through Cloudways and Hostinger, choose the server location with you, and take responsibility for setup, monitoring, backups and the WordPress layer on top. Hosting sits within our Managed Services, which start from $2,000 per year.

In detail

Web Hosting in Malawi, in detail.

01

Choosing where your site lives

Server location affects speed and data protection. A server nearer your visitors responds faster, which matters on mobile networks. The Data Protection Act 2024 also sets conditions for transferring personal data out of Malawi, so if your site stores customer, pupil or patient records on a server abroad, your data protection lead should be comfortable with the basis for that transfer. We set out the options our partners offer and document the choice.

02

Your .mw domain, in your name

The .mw registry is run by SDNP, and businesses commonly use .co.mw or .com.mw, non-profits .org.mw and academic institutions .ac.mw, with .gov.mw reserved for government. Names are allocated first come, first served. We help you register or transfer the domain, set up DNS correctly and make sure the registrant is your organisation, not an individual staff member or a former supplier who could let it lapse.

03

Hosting that stays fast

Malawian visitors mostly browse on phones and often on limited data, so a slow server costs you attention as well as money. We configure server-level caching, a content delivery network for images and files, and up-to-date PHP versions. For shops and learning platforms we size the server for busy periods, such as term starts or a sale, rather than for an average quiet day.

04

Backups and security as standard

Every site we host gets automated daily backups stored away from the server, an SSL certificate, firewall rules and malware scanning. We keep the server software patched and monitor uptime continuously. If the site goes down, we are alerted and act, and because we share almost the whole working day with Malawi, issues are usually in hand before your morning meetings end.

05

Clear costs in a moving currency

Hosting and the services around it are usually billed in US dollars, and the kwacha has lost value sharply since 2022. We quote managed hosting as part of a fixed USD annual plan so you can budget once a year. Your domain renewal, business email licences and any premium plugins are listed separately in the plan, so nothing renews unnoticed.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you host websites inside Malawi?

No. We host through Cloudways and Hostinger, whose data centres are outside Malawi. For most organisational sites that works well. If your organisation handles sensitive personal data, check with your data protection adviser that a transfer outside Malawi meets the conditions in the Data Protection Act 2024 before you choose.

Can you register a .co.mw domain for us?

Yes. We help you register or transfer a .co.mw, .com.mw, .org.mw or other .mw domain through a registrar, with your organisation as the registrant. Names are allocated on a first come, first served basis, so if you want a particular name, it is worth securing it early.

How much does hosting cost?

Managed hosting is part of our Managed Services, from $2,000 per year, which also covers maintenance and security. Domain renewals and email licences are listed separately in your plan. You receive a fixed USD figure in writing, so the annual cost does not move with the exchange rate.

Can you move our site from our current host?

Yes. We copy the site to the new server, test it on a temporary address, then switch the domain at a quiet time and check forms, email and payments afterwards. Your existing site stays live throughout, so visitors do not see an outage.

Will our email move with the hosting?

Not necessarily. We usually recommend keeping email on a dedicated service such as Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, separate from web hosting. That way a website problem never takes your email down. We set up the DNS records so both work together correctly.
