School websites for Malawian primary and secondary schools

We design school websites that help parents choose, apply and stay informed, and that help staff publish news without a technician. Pupil and parent data is treated with the care the Data Protection Act 2024 expects.

Overview

School Websites for organisations in Malawi.

A school website in Malawi has several audiences at once. Prospective parents want to understand the school's character, curriculum and fees. Current parents want term dates, notices and a way to pay. Staff want to post news and results quickly. Former pupils and sponsors want to stay connected. A good site serves each group without making any of them dig.

Our team built a virtual learning environment for Alvina Schools and an online school for BFI Insights, so we understand how schools work online. We bring that experience to Malawian private and mission schools, colleges and education trusts.

In detail

School Websites in Malawi, in detail.

01

Admissions that parents can finish

Admissions forms should be short, work on a phone and save progress, because a parent may start on a lunch break and finish in the evening. We collect only what the admissions office needs at that stage, let parents upload documents as photos, and send a clear confirmation. Staff get applications in an organised list they can filter by class and year, instead of a cluttered inbox.

02

Fees and payments in kwacha

Many Malawian parents pay through mobile money. Through PayChangu, a school site can accept application fees, school fees, trip payments and uniform orders by Airtel Money, TNM Mpamba, card or bank transfer, with each payment matched to a pupil reference. Fee tables are built so the bursar can update them each term in one place, which matters when costs follow a changing currency.

03

Safeguarding pupil data

Schools hold some of the most sensitive data there is: children's names, photos, health notes and family details. Under the Data Protection Act 2024, a school processing data on more than 10,000 Malawian residents must register with MACRA, and MACRA's proposed fee schedule names public schools specifically. We restrict who can see admissions records, keep children's details out of public pages, add photo consent fields and document retention periods so your records are not kept longer than needed.

04

News, calendars and notices

Parents trust a school whose website is current. We set up simple publishing for news, a term calendar parents can add to their phones, a notices area for urgent updates and downloadable letters. Staff publish from a phone if they need to. Old news is archived automatically so the homepage always shows what matters this week. Templates keep every post consistent, whoever writes it.

05

Room to grow into learning

Some schools want more than a website: homework portals, recorded lessons or revision quizzes. We build the main site so a learning area can be added later without starting again. When you are ready, the same WordPress installation can host courses, track progress and give pupils and teachers their own logins. Pupils keep one login for everything, and the school keeps a single system to maintain, back up and secure rather than several disconnected tools.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can parents pay school fees through the website?

Yes. We integrate PayChangu so parents can pay by Airtel Money, TNM Mpamba, card or bank transfer. Each payment carries a pupil or invoice reference, so the bursar can reconcile it easily. The school opens the merchant account in its own name and the money goes directly to the school.

Does our school need to register with MACRA?

Registration applies to organisations processing personal information on more than 10,000 people resident in Malawi, or information significant to the economy, society or security. A large school or group of schools may reach that. We can document what your website collects, but please confirm your position with a legal adviser or MACRA.

What does a school website cost?

A school website usually starts as a Strategy and Design project from $1,500. Adding online fee payments, parent logins or a learning area brings in development work, which starts from $5,000. We scope it in writing with a fixed USD price, and can align payments with your school's budget cycle.

Can teachers update the site themselves?

Yes. We give each staff member a role with access only to what they need, such as news or a class page, and train them on publishing. Senior staff can review posts before they appear if you prefer an approval step.

Should we use a .ac.mw or .edu.mw domain?

The .mw registry lists .ac.mw for academic institutions and .edu.mw for higher academic institutions, so the right one depends on your level. Many schools also hold a .com. We help you register the domain in the school's name and point everything to the new site.
