E-learning platforms built for learners in Malawi

We build WordPress learning platforms for colleges, training providers, NGOs and companies in Malawi: courses, quizzes, certificates and course fees paid by mobile money. Every lesson is designed for a phone and a careful data budget.

Overview

E-learning Platforms for organisations in Malawi.

Online learning in Malawi has to work for learners who study on a phone, often on a bundle they buy themselves, and sometimes in places where the connection drops. A platform that streams long, high-resolution video or needs a laptop excludes many of the people it was meant to reach. We design courses around short lessons, light media and progress that is saved automatically.

Our team built BFI School, an online school with payments in four currencies, certificates and an affiliate programme, and a virtual learning environment for Alvina Schools. We bring that experience to training programmes, professional courses and staff development in Malawi.

In detail

E-learning Platforms in Malawi, in detail.

01

Courses, quizzes and certificates

We set up a learning management system on WordPress with courses split into modules and lessons, quizzes that mark themselves, assignments that tutors can grade and certificates issued automatically when a learner completes the requirements. Each certificate can carry a unique verification code, so an employer can confirm it is genuine. Tutors and administrators get reports on enrolment, progress and completion.

02

Course fees by mobile money

For paid courses, learners in Malawi need to pay the way they pay for everything else. We connect the platform to PayChangu so fees can be paid by Airtel Money, TNM Mpamba, card or bank transfer, with access granted the moment payment is confirmed. Instalment plans, group enrolments paid by an employer and discount codes for sponsored learners can all be configured.

03

Lessons that respect data costs

With internet use still at 18% of Malawi's population in early 2025, according to DataReportal, many learners are new to online study and conscious of data. We favour text, images and short audio, offer downloadable notes and use compressed, modest-resolution video where video truly helps. Lessons resume where the learner left off, so a dropped connection does not mean starting again.

04

Learner records under the 2024 Act

A learning platform stores names, contact details, results and sometimes employer information. The Data Protection Act 2024 expects that data to be handled lawfully and securely, and a programme that enrols more than 10,000 Malawian residents must register with MACRA. We limit tutor access to their own cohorts, keep results private, document data flows and agree retention periods for completed learners.

05

Built to grow with your programme

Many platforms start with one course and a few dozen learners, then grow into a catalogue serving thousands. We build on WordPress so new courses, tutors and languages can be added by your team, and we size hosting for busy enrolment periods. When you are ready, we can add memberships, cohort scheduling or integration with your student records system. Your content stays yours throughout.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Which LMS do you use?

We build on WordPress with an established learning plugin chosen for your needs, extended with custom code where necessary. The choice depends on whether you need cohorts, memberships, assignments or detailed reporting. We explain the options in discovery and agree the stack in the written scope.

Can learners pay course fees with Airtel Money or TNM Mpamba?

Yes. Through PayChangu, learners can pay by Airtel Money, TNM Mpamba, card or bank transfer. Access to the course is granted automatically once payment is confirmed. For sponsored learners, we can set up codes or employer invoicing so they enrol without paying individually.

What does an e-learning platform cost?

Learning platforms are development projects, starting from $5,000 per project. The price depends on the number of courses we set up, payment rules, certificates, integrations and reporting. You receive a written scope with a fixed USD price before work begins.

Will it work for learners with poor connections?

We design for that. Lessons are light, progress saves automatically and notes can be downloaded for offline reading. We test on phones over slower connections before launch. No platform can work without any connection at all, but we reduce the data each lesson needs.

Can we offer courses in Chichewa?

Yes. WordPress can host courses in more than one language, and learners can choose theirs. You or your subject experts provide the Chichewa content; we build the structure, navigation and certificates to handle both languages cleanly. Certificates can be issued in either language.
