Overview

Web Hosting for organisations in Canada.

Hosting is often chosen on price alone, then regretted when a slow server, a missed backup or an unclear data location becomes a problem. For Canadian organisations, location matters more than it used to, because privacy laws in Quebec and procurement rules in the public sector can make where data sits a real question.

We do not run our own data centres. We manage WordPress hosting through Cloudways and Hostinger, choose the location and size with you, and take care of the server so your team does not have to.

In detail

Web Hosting in Canada, in detail.

01

Canadian data centres when you need them

Through Cloudways we can place your site on infrastructure in Canada, including DigitalOcean in Toronto and AWS in Montreal. That keeps pages quick for Canadian visitors and keeps data inside the country when your policies call for it. Hostinger does not list a Canadian location, so we use it only where US-based hosting is acceptable and cost matters most. We explain the trade-off before you decide.

02

Data residency, PIPEDA and Quebec

PIPEDA does not forbid hosting outside Canada, but the OPC expects you to stay accountable for that data and tell people it may be processed in another jurisdiction. Quebec goes further: before personal information leaves the province, including to a service provider, a privacy impact assessment and written agreement are required. Where law or policy calls for local storage, we agree the hosting choice with you and your legal adviser.

03

.ca domains held in your name

A .ca domain signals a Canadian organisation, and CIRA only allows registrants who meet its Canadian Presence Requirements, such as Canadian citizens, permanent residents and legally recognised Canadian organisations. We register domains in your organisation's name through a certified registrar, never in ours, and manage DNS, SSL certificates and renewals so the domain does not lapse. Renewal reminders come to you as well as to us, so nothing depends on a single inbox.

04

What managed hosting covers

We set up the server for WordPress, apply security hardening, configure caching and a content delivery network, schedule daily off-site backups and monitor uptime. Server software is kept up to date, and we scale resources when traffic grows, for example ahead of a seasonal sale. Staging copies let us test changes before they reach the live site. Access to the server is limited to named team members.

05

Cost of hosting in Canada

Hosting itself is billed by the provider and depends on server size, location and traffic. Our Managed Services, which include hosting management, maintenance, security and performance, start from $2,000 per year in US dollars. We can give a Canadian dollar reference figure on request, and the written scope lists exactly what is included. If your organisation already pays for hosting it is happy with, we can manage that account instead of moving you.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can our website be hosted in Canada?

Yes. Through Cloudways we can use Canadian data centres, including Toronto and Montreal. We recommend this when most of your visitors are in Canada or when your policies or contracts require data to stay in the country. Otherwise, a nearby US region may cost less.

Do we have to host in Canada under PIPEDA?

PIPEDA does not generally require it, but you remain accountable for the data and should tell people it may be processed elsewhere. Quebec's law adds an assessment before data leaves the province. Where local storage is required, we agree the choice with you and your legal adviser.

Can a foreign company register a .ca domain?

Only if it meets CIRA's Canadian Presence Requirements, for example by being a legally recognised Canadian organisation or holding a registered Canadian trademark. That is one reason we always register domains in the client's name, so the eligible Canadian registrant is on record.

Can you move our site from our current host?

Yes. We copy the site to the new server, test it on a temporary address, lower DNS settings in advance and switch during low traffic. Email records are moved carefully so mail keeps flowing. We confirm everything works on the new server before the old account is closed, and keep a copy until you are satisfied.

How much does website hosting cost in Canada?

The server cost depends on size, location and traffic, and is billed by the hosting provider. Our Managed Services, which wrap hosting with maintenance and security, start from $2,000 per year in US dollars. A Canadian dollar reference figure is available on request, and the provider's own bill is separate.
