Hosting in Botswana

Managed WordPress hosting for Botswana websites

We run WordPress sites on infrastructure from our partners Cloudways and Hostinger and look after the server so you do not have to. For Botswana clients we also talk openly about where data sits and what the law says about it.

Overview

Web Hosting for organisations in Botswana.

Search for web hosting companies in Botswana and you will find local providers, resellers and international brands side by side. Price is usually the first comparison, but for a WordPress site the more important questions are who handles updates and security, how fast pages load for your visitors, and where personal data ends up.

Hosting with us is part of managed services, starting from $2,000 a year, which also includes maintenance and support. We are open about the trade-offs, including one that matters more in Botswana than in many neighbouring markets.

In detail

Web Hosting in Botswana, in detail.

01

What managed hosting includes

We configure and run the server: PHP versions, caching, SSL certificates, firewalls and backups stored away from the server itself. You never need to log into a control panel unless you want to. If traffic grows, we move you to a larger plan. Your files and database remain yours, and we will help you move them if you ever leave.

02

Cross-border data and the 2024 Act

Our partners' data centres are outside Botswana. The Data Protection Act No. 18 of 2024 prohibits transferring personal data to another country unless the Minister has designated that country, the Commissioner authorises the transfer, or another exception, such as consent, applies. For a site that only publishes information this is rarely an issue. For one storing customer, member or student records, we document what data would be held abroad and recommend you confirm the position with a legal adviser. If a host in Botswana is the right answer, we will tell you.

03

Speed for visitors in Botswana

Distance adds delay, so we pick the nearest suitable data centre our partners offer, then reduce what each page has to load. Caching, compressed images and lean code often matter more than server location for people on mobile data. We measure real load times rather than relying on a host's marketing. Where it helps, we add a content delivery network so images and scripts are served from locations closer to your visitors.

04

Your .co.bw domain

The .bw registry is run by BOCRA, and most businesses use .co.bw through an accredited registrar, typically with company registration documents. We keep the domain in your organisation's name, point it at hosting, and set DNS records for email and verification. If you already own a .com, we can use that instead or alongside. We also record renewal dates in your handover notes, because an expired domain takes the website and email down together.

05

Moving to us without downtime

Migrations start from $1,000. We copy the site and database, test on a temporary address, switch DNS at a quiet hour on Botswana time and keep the old host running until everything checks out. Email is planned separately so no mailbox is lost. Before the switch, we lower DNS cache times so the change spreads quickly, and afterwards we check forms, payments and email one by one.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Are your servers in Botswana?

No. We host with Cloudways and Hostinger, whose data centres are outside Botswana. Because the 2024 Act restricts sending personal data abroad without an exception, we discuss this openly for sites that store personal records and suggest you confirm the position with your adviser.

Can you register a .co.bw domain for us?

We help you register it with a BOCRA-accredited registrar in your organisation's name and handle the technical setup afterwards. Registrars usually ask for company registration documents, so it helps to have those ready. If your domain was registered by a previous supplier, we help you get it transferred into your name.

How much does hosting cost?

Hosting is included in managed services, which start from $2,000 a year and cover maintenance, security and support as well as the server. The domain and business email are separate costs, and we list each one in your scope.

Do you host email too?

We set up email with a provider you choose, such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or Zoho, and configure the DNS records. Keeping email separate from the web server means mailboxes are unaffected if the site moves. We also set the authentication records that help messages reach inboxes.

What if the site goes down?

We monitor uptime continuously, investigate alerts, restore service and tell you what happened. Our hours overlap with yours since Lagos is one hour behind Gaborone, so outages during your day are handled while you are at work. Where an outage was caused by something we can prevent, we put that prevention in place.
