Ecommerce in Botswana

Ecommerce websites for sellers in Botswana

We build WooCommerce stores that take pula payments through providers available in Botswana, and that customers can complete comfortably on a phone. The checkout is the part we spend most time on, because that is where sales are won or lost.

Overview

Ecommerce Websites for organisations in Botswana.

Building an ecommerce website in Botswana means working with a payment landscape that differs from larger markets. Global gateways that sellers elsewhere take for granted are not always open to Botswana businesses, so the provider question needs answering before design starts, not after.

Store builds sit within our development work, starting from $5,000 per project, scoped in writing. We build on WooCommerce, so you own your store and its customer data rather than renting a platform.

In detail

Ecommerce Websites in Botswana, in detail.

01

Choosing payment providers that work locally

For card payments, DPO Pay by Network operates in Botswana with Stanbic Bank listed as acquirer. For mobile wallets, Orange Money offers a web payment API to registered merchants who subscribe at an Orange store. Mascom's MyZakaPay, launched in 2024, works over USSD, with customers paying via *168#, so it suits a pay-by-phone option with confirmation rather than an embedded button. We help you decide which combination fits your customers and integrate the ones you sign up to.

02

A checkout built for phones

Most abandoned carts come from friction: too many fields, unclear delivery costs, or a payment page that loads slowly on mobile data. We cut fields to the minimum, show delivery charges before the final step, and keep the payment page light. Every price displays in pula, and the order confirmation explains clearly what happens next. Guest checkout is available by default, because forcing account creation before a first purchase loses buyers. Returning customers can still save their details if they choose.

03

Delivery and collection rules

Delivery across Botswana varies by distance and courier, and some sellers prefer collection from a shop or depot. WooCommerce lets us set rates by area, weight or order value, offer free collection, and hide options that do not apply. We configure this from your real arrangements rather than guessing. Order emails then confirm the method chosen, the charge applied and when to expect the parcel, which cuts down on follow-up calls to your staff.

04

Customer data and the 2024 Act

A store holds names, phone numbers, addresses and order history. Under the Data Protection Act No. 18 of 2024, you must protect that data and report a breach to the Information and Data Protection Commission without delay, where feasible within 72 hours. We restrict admin access, enable two-factor login, keep payment card details with the gateway rather than on your server, and document where customer data is stored.

05

Running the store after launch

WooCommerce and payment plugins update often, and an outdated payment plugin is a common cause of failed orders. We train your staff to manage products, stock and orders, and offer managed services from $2,000 a year to keep the store updated, backed up and monitored. Your team also gets a short written guide to processing refunds, adjusting stock and running sales, so routine tasks never depend on us.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can we use Stripe in Botswana?

Stripe does not list Botswana among the countries where businesses can open an account. Botswana sellers therefore usually use a gateway such as DPO Pay, which works with local acquiring banks. If your organisation has an entity in a Stripe-supported country, we can discuss that option during scoping.

How do customers pay with Orange Money on our site?

Once you are a registered Orange Money merchant subscribed to the web payment service, we integrate it so customers choose Orange Money at checkout and approve the payment. The order completes only when confirmation arrives, which avoids marking unpaid orders as paid.

Can we sell to customers outside Botswana?

Yes, if your gateway and courier support it. We can set separate shipping rules for international orders and display prices clearly. Selling digital products abroad may bring tax obligations in those countries, which your accountant should confirm. We confirm with your gateway which currencies and card types it accepts before setting this up.

Who sets the transaction fees?

Your payment provider, under your merchant agreement. We do not add fees to transactions. We can show you where fees appear in reports so your finance team can reconcile payouts against orders. Comparing two providers' fee schedules before you apply is worth an hour of anyone's time, and we are happy to read them with you.

How long does a store take to build?

It depends on the number of products, the payment providers and any custom features. We set out the timeline in the written scope. Merchant account approval often takes longer than the build itself, so we recommend starting that process early.
