Website redesign in Ethiopia without losing what already works

A redesign should fix what holds your site back while keeping the search visibility, links and content you have built. We start with an audit, then rebuild on your existing domain.

Overview

Website Redesign for organisations in Ethiopia.

Ethiopian organisations usually come to a redesign for one of a few reasons: the site looks dated, it is slow on phones, editors cannot update it, or it was built before the 2024 data protection law and still collects data carelessly.

Whatever the trigger, a redesign carries risk. Change every address without redirects and Google forgets your pages. Remove old content without a plan and you lose enquiries. Our process is built to avoid those losses.

In detail

Website Redesign in Ethiopia, in detail.

01

Starting with an honest audit

Before proposing a new look we review the current site: which pages attract visitors and enquiries, which ones nobody reads, how fast it loads on a mobile connection, what plugins it depends on and where personal data goes. We also check how it handles Amharic text, dates and forms. The audit becomes a short report you keep, and it tells us what to protect, what to rewrite and what to retire.

02

Protecting search visibility on your .et domain

Your domain, whether .et, .com.et or a .com, carries the reputation your site has earned in search. We keep it, map every important old address to its new equivalent with permanent redirects, carry over page titles and descriptions that perform, and submit the updated sitemap to Google Search Console after launch. We then monitor for errors in the weeks that follow and fix any broken paths quickly.

03

Bringing old forms up to the 2024 standard

Many Ethiopian sites were built before Proclamation No. 1321/2024. Their contact and application forms may store everything forever, send copies to personal email accounts or tick consent boxes by default. A redesign is the right moment to fix this: separate unticked consent, a clear privacy notice, limited retention and controlled staff access. We also review where submissions are stored in light of the law's data sovereignty article.

04

Adding the features you now need

Redesigns often add capabilities the old site lacked: telebirr or CBE Birr payments through Chapa or SantimPay, an events calendar that shows Ethiopian dates clearly, a properly structured Amharic section or a members' area. We scope these alongside the visual work so the new design is planned around them rather than squeezed in later. Each feature is scoped in writing with its own testing plan, so the budget stays visible.

05

Launching with care

We build the new site on a staging copy, migrate and tidy content, and test it on phones and desktops before switching over. Launch happens at a quiet time agreed with you in East Africa Time, with a rollback plan ready. Strategy and design for a redesign starts from $1,500 per project, with development scoped separately where new features are needed.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Will a redesign hurt our Google rankings?

It can if handled carelessly. We keep your domain, redirect old addresses to new ones, preserve titles and content that perform and check Search Console after launch. Some movement in the first weeks is normal, but a well-managed redesign should protect the visibility you have and often improves it.

Can you redesign a site that is not on WordPress?

Yes. We move sites from other platforms into WordPress as part of the redesign, bringing content across and setting up redirects. If the move is substantial, it is scoped under our Migrations service, which starts from $1,000 per migration. Common starting points include older custom builds, hosted website builders and other content management systems.

Do we need to rewrite all our content?

Rarely. The audit shows which pages are working and should stay largely as they are, and which need editing or merging. We can help structure content, while your team or writer provides the Amharic and English text. We also flag pages that need updating for the data protection law, such as the privacy notice.

How long will the old site stay live?

Until the new one is ready. We build on a staging copy, so your current site keeps running throughout. The switch happens once you have approved the new version, and we keep a backup of the old site in case anything needs checking.

What does a redesign cost?

Design work starts from $1,500 per project. If the redesign also adds features like payments or a members' area, development is scoped separately from $5,000 per project. You receive a written quote listing every template and feature before work begins.
