Website design in Ethiopia, planned for the people who will use it

Good design starts with who visits, on what device and in which language. We design WordPress websites for Ethiopian organisations that read clearly in Amharic and English, load sensibly on mobile data and lead visitors to act.

Overview

Website Design for organisations in Ethiopia.

Ethio Telecom counts more than 51 million mobile data users, which tells you where most visitors will first see your site: on a phone, often on a prepaid bundle. Designs that look impressive on a large office monitor can be slow and confusing in that setting.

Our design process begins with discovery, moves through structure and wireframes, then to visual design in your brand, and ends with a build your team can edit without calling a developer for every change.

In detail

Website Design in Ethiopia, in detail.

01

Typography for Amharic and the Ge'ez script

Amharic and Tigrinya are written in the Ge'ez script, which has different character widths, heights and line spacing from Latin text. A heading that fits neatly in English may wrap awkwardly or overflow in Amharic. We choose web fonts that include the full Ethiopic range, set line heights for both scripts and design navigation labels with room to grow. Where you publish in Oromo, Somali or Afar as well, we plan the language switcher and page structure early rather than bolting it on after launch.

02

Dates and times that cannot be misread

Ethiopia's civil calendar runs thirteen months, and the familiar hour count starts at dawn rather than midnight, so 'three o'clock' can mean 9am. On event listings, opening hours and application deadlines we design date components that state the system being used, and can show the Ethiopian and Gregorian dates side by side. It is a small detail that prevents missed appointments and support calls.

03

Forms that respect the data protection law

Under Proclamation No. 1321/2024, consent must be free, informed, specific and given by an active step, and it cannot be bundled with other terms. That shapes form design directly: separate unticked consent boxes, short plain-language notices and only the fields you genuinely need. We design enquiry, application and donation forms this way from the first wireframe, which is easier and cheaper than reworking them after a complaint or a regulator's question.

04

From discovery to a site your team can run

Discovery clarifies goals, audiences and the content you have. Wireframes then fix page structure before any colour is chosen, so feedback stays focused. Visual design applies your brand to key templates, and we build those templates in WordPress as reusable blocks. Your editors can add pages and update news in Amharic or English without breaking the layout. Strategy and design starts from $1,500 per project, scoped in writing.

05

Designing for light pages on mobile data

We treat page weight as a design decision, not only a technical one. That means fewer heavy hero videos, images sized for phone screens, system-friendly icons and clear calls to action placed within easy thumb reach. We review designs on mid-range Android handsets over mobile connections, because that is how many visitors in Addis Ababa, Hawassa or Bahir Dar will see them.

Platforms we have built.

Two redesigns delivered by our Nigeria team show how we restructure content and layout for clarity, the same approach we would take for an Ethiopian organisation.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you design a website in Amharic?

Yes. We design layouts that work in Amharic and English, select fonts that support the Ge'ez script and test headings, menus and buttons in both. You or a translator provide the Amharic copy, and we make sure the design and WordPress setup handle it properly, including search and page titles.

How long does website design take?

It depends on the number of templates and how quickly content and feedback arrive. A focused company site moves faster than a multi-language portal. Your written scope sets out each stage, from discovery to final designs, with dates agreed together so your team can plan reviews around its own calendar.

Will we be able to update the site ourselves?

Yes. We build designs as reusable WordPress blocks and patterns, then train your editors. Adding a news post, changing a team profile or publishing an event in Amharic should not need a developer. We also provide written guidance your team can refer back to.

Do you work with designers already on our team?

Happily. If you have a brand designer or in-house creative, we can work from their brand guidelines or designs and focus on structure, usability and the WordPress build. We agree in writing who owns which decisions so the project stays clear.

Can we meet during Ethiopian business hours?

Yes. Addis Ababa is two hours ahead of our team in Lagos, so your working day overlaps almost entirely with ours. We send invitations in East Africa Time and confirm the time in writing to avoid any mix-up with the Ethiopian clock.
