School website design in Ethiopia for admissions, parents and pupils

A school website is often the first place parents look and the place they return to for term dates, fees and news. We design and build WordPress sites for Ethiopian schools that serve families clearly and protect pupil data.

Overview

School Websites for organisations in Ethiopia.

Parents in Addis Ababa and beyond search for schools by name to check admissions, fees and the calendar. If that information is missing, out of date or buried in a PDF, they call the office instead, or look elsewhere.

We build school websites that make the essentials easy to find and easy for staff to update. Our team has built a virtual learning environment for a school in Nigeria, and we bring that experience to Ethiopian schools with attention to local payments, calendar and data law.

In detail

School Websites in Ethiopia, in detail.

01

Admissions that work online

An admissions section should answer the questions parents actually ask: entry ages, required documents, deadlines and fees. We build application forms that collect only what the school needs at each stage, allow document uploads, and send confirmations to parents and notifications to the admissions team. Where an application fee is charged, parents can pay through telebirr, CBE Birr or a card via a gateway such as Chapa or SantimPay.

02

Term dates in the Ethiopian calendar

Many Ethiopian schools work to the Ethiopian calendar, which has thirteen months and starts its year on 11 September. International schools may follow the Gregorian calendar, and many families use both. We design the school calendar to state clearly which system each date uses, and can display both side by side. Times are given unambiguously, so a parents' meeting is not missed because of the difference between Ethiopian and East Africa clock time.

03

Pupil data and Proclamation No. 1321/2024

Admissions forms and parents' areas hold information about children, including names, ages and sometimes health or family details. Under Ethiopia's Personal Data Protection Proclamation, this needs consent, careful access control and, under Article 22, storage on servers in Ethiopia, with sensitive data needing approval before any transfer abroad. We limit fields, restrict access by role, avoid publishing identifiable pupil photos without consent and discuss hosting so your school can meet its duties.

04

An .edu.et domain and a credible presence

Ethio Telecom restricts .edu.et domains to eligible educational organisations in Ethiopia. Non-government schools apply with a request letter, business licence, TIN and VAT certificate. We help prepare the request, or work with an existing domain, and set up DNS, SSL and school email so staff send messages from a domain parents recognise. If the application takes time, we can launch on an interim domain and switch once the .edu.et address is approved, with redirects in place.

05

News, galleries and a parents' area

Regular news builds trust with families. We give staff simple tools to post updates in Amharic and English, share photo galleries with sensible privacy settings and publish circulars. A password-protected parents' area can hold timetables, fee notices and documents not meant for the public web. Staff permissions are set by role, so a teacher can post news without being able to see admissions records. We train administrative staff and leave a short written guide.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can parents pay school fees through the website?

Yes, through a payment gateway. Chapa and SantimPay support telebirr and CBE Birr, among other methods, and send the school a confirmation for each payment. Check transaction limits for larger fee amounts: we design the payment page to offer bank options when a wallet limit would be exceeded.

Can we get an .edu.et domain?

If your school is eligible. Ethio Telecom restricts .edu.et to qualifying educational organisations in Ethiopia and asks non-government applicants for a request letter, business licence, TIN and VAT certificate. We help with the request and can use an interim domain while it is processed.

How do you protect pupils' information?

We collect only the data the school needs, restrict staff access by role, protect forms and the parents' area with secure logins and SSL, and keep backups. We also review where data is stored in light of Ethiopia's data sovereignty rules, and document it for the school's records.

Can teachers update the website themselves?

Yes. We build the site with simple editing tools and train the staff who will post news, events and documents. Most updates take minutes, with no technical knowledge needed. We also set permissions so each staff member can edit only the sections they are responsible for, which keeps sensitive pages protected.

Can the website include online learning?

It can. A school website can link to, or include, a learning platform for lessons, quizzes and assignments. That is a larger project, scoped under development, and we often plan it as a second phase once the main site is live.
