An ecommerce website in Ethiopia that takes the payments your customers use

Selling online in Ethiopia depends on a checkout that accepts telebirr, CBE Birr and local bank channels, not only foreign cards. We build WooCommerce stores around Ethiopian gateways and test every payment path before you open.

Overview

Ecommerce Websites for organisations in Ethiopia.

The hardest part of Ethiopian ecommerce is rarely the product pages. It is getting money from a customer's wallet to your account reliably, confirming the order automatically and handling the occasional failed or reversed payment without a spreadsheet.

WooCommerce gives you a flexible, open-source store on WordPress. We add the payment integration, delivery rules and order workflow your business needs, and make sure your team can run it day to day.

In detail

Ecommerce Websites in Ethiopia, in detail.

01

Choosing a gateway for Ethiopian checkouts

Stripe is not available to Ethiopian businesses, so the choice sits between local gateways. Chapa's documentation lists telebirr, CBE Birr, Awash Birr, Coopay-Ebirr, M-Pesa, Amole, PayPal and cards, with ETB and USD as supported currencies. SantimPay, a National Bank of Ethiopia licensed payment gateway operator, connects telebirr, CBE Birr and Bank of Abyssinia cards. Ethio Telecom also offers direct telebirr merchant integration. We compare methods, limits and settlement terms against your products and customers before recommending one.

02

Transaction limits shape the checkout

Each wallet sets its own ceiling. Chapa's published limits, for example, cap a single telebirr payment at 75,000 birr, while CBE bank transfer allows far larger amounts. If you sell furniture, electronics or wholesale orders, some baskets will exceed a wallet limit. We design the checkout to show suitable methods for the order value, offer bank transfer or split payment where appropriate, and explain clearly why an option is unavailable instead of letting the payment fail.

03

Orders confirmed by the gateway, not by hope

Mobile wallet payments are approved on the customer's phone, often seconds or minutes after the order is placed. We build the store to wait for the gateway's signed confirmation, then update stock, send the receipt and notify your team. If confirmation never comes, the order is flagged rather than shipped. That protects you from fulfilling unpaid orders and gives customers a clear status message.

04

Customer data and the 2024 proclamation

A store holds names, phone numbers and delivery addresses, all personal data under Proclamation No. 1321/2024. We keep account creation optional, collect only what delivery needs, add unbundled consent for marketing messages and limit staff access to order details. Because Article 22 addresses storing personal data in Ethiopia, we discuss where the store's database will live before hosting is chosen.

05

Pricing in birr with a market-determined rate

Since July 2024 the birr has floated, so stores that price imported goods need to update prices more often than before. WooCommerce lets your team bulk-edit prices, schedule sales and, where your gateway supports it, display USD for diaspora or international buyers. We set this up so price changes are quick and do not require a developer. We can also show a short note at checkout explaining which currency the customer will be charged in, which reduces abandoned baskets.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can customers pay with telebirr on a WooCommerce store?

Yes, through a gateway integration. Chapa and SantimPay both support telebirr, and Ethio Telecom offers direct merchant integration. The customer selects telebirr at checkout, approves the payment on their phone, and the store updates once the gateway confirms it. We test this flow end to end before launch.

Can we accept payments from customers abroad?

Chapa lists PayPal and international cards among its pay-in methods, with USD as a supported currency, which can suit diaspora or overseas buyers. Availability depends on your merchant agreement with the gateway, so we confirm what your account can accept before we build the checkout options.

Is there a ready-made WooCommerce plugin for Ethiopian gateways?

Some exist, but quality varies. A community Chapa plugin was closed on WordPress.org in January 2026 for a security issue. We review any plugin before use and, where needed, build and maintain the integration ourselves using the gateway's documented API.

How much does an ecommerce website cost?

Ecommerce falls under our Development service, which starts from $5,000 per project. The final price depends on catalogue size, gateway work, delivery rules and integrations. Gateway transaction fees are charged separately by the provider. You receive a written scope before any work begins.

Can our store link to our inventory system?

Often, yes. If your inventory or accounting software offers an API, we can sync stock levels, prices or orders with WooCommerce. We check the system's documentation during scoping and agree exactly which data moves in which direction. Where no API exists, a scheduled import of a spreadsheet export is sometimes a practical middle ground.

Will the store work well on phones?

That is our starting point. Most Ethiopian shoppers will arrive on a phone, so we design product pages, filters and checkout for small screens, keep images light and test the full purchase on mobile connections. We also keep the number of checkout steps low, because every extra screen costs time and data on a mobile connection.
