01What drives the cost of a website
Four things account for most of the difference between quotes. First, the number of distinct page layouts and how much original design they need. Second, functionality: payments, bookings, member accounts, course delivery or integrations with an ERP or school system each add real engineering. Third, content: who writes it, how many languages it appears in, and whether Amharic or other Ge'ez-script text needs its own typography. Fourth, the level of care after launch. A quote that does not state each of these clearly is hard to compare with one that does.
02Kinds of website and what each involves
A company or NGO site presents services, team and contact routes, usually with a news section and enquiry forms. An ecommerce site adds a catalogue, stock, delivery rules and a gateway that accepts telebirr, CBE Birr or cards. A school or training site may need admissions forms, a parents' area and fee payments. A web application, such as a recruitment portal or member dashboard, is closer to custom software and is scoped feature by feature. Each step up adds design, development and testing time, which is why prices diverge so widely.
03Running costs to budget for in Ethiopia
Beyond the build, plan for recurring costs. Your .et or .com.et domain is renewed yearly through Ethio Telecom, which publishes its domain prices in birr. Hosting is billed monthly or yearly, and if Article 22 of Proclamation No. 1321/2024 applies to your data, storage inside Ethiopia may affect which hosts you can use. Payment gateways charge per transaction and set limits per method. Business email on Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or Zoho is charged per user. We list each of these in your proposal so nothing arrives as a surprise.
04Compliance work is part of the price
Ethiopia's data protection law requires controllers and processors to register with the Ethiopian Communications Authority, gather consent that is not bundled with other terms, and report breaches within 72 hours. A responsible build therefore includes clear consent on forms, a privacy notice, sensible retention of submissions, access controls and backups you can restore. These items take time and some agencies leave them out of a headline price. We include them in the scope so the cost reflects a site you can defend.
05Where our prices start
We price in US dollars. Strategy and design, covering discovery, design and landing pages, starts from $1,500 per project. Development, including custom themes and plugins, WooCommerce and learning platforms, starts from $5,000 per project. Migrations start from $1,000 per migration. Managed services, covering hosting through our partners, maintenance, security and performance, start from $2,000 per year. These are starting points, not packages: your written quote reflects your actual scope.
06Getting an accurate quote
The fastest route to a reliable figure is a short discovery call. Bring examples of sites you like, a list of the features you need, which payment methods your customers use, the languages you publish in and any deadline tied to the Ethiopian calendar, such as an event, term or New Year launch. We then send a written scope with milestones in USD. Because the birr is market-determined, agreeing milestones early helps you plan conversions with confidence.
