Web applications

Web applications and custom systems for South African teams

Many processes still run on spreadsheets, email threads and paper forms. We replace them with web applications built on WordPress: portals, approval workflows and dashboards your staff and customers can use from any browser.

Overview

Web Application Development for organisations in South Africa.

When South African organisations look for custom software development, they often assume a bespoke application means starting from nothing, with long timelines and a single developer who holds all the knowledge. For many internal tools that is unnecessary.

WordPress provides user accounts, roles, an admin interface, security updates and a huge ecosystem. We build the custom parts above that base: the data model, the workflow logic, the dashboards and the integrations. You get a tailored system on a foundation many developers already know.

In detail

Web Application Development in South Africa, in detail.

01

What we build

Typical projects include recruitment portals where candidates apply and managers shortlist, supplier or client portals with document exchange, booking and scheduling systems, approval workflows for leave or purchase requests, and reporting dashboards that pull figures from several sources. For ASEP Logistics we built a recruitment portal with an HR dashboard. For the Federal Ministry of Education boot camp with PLANE-FCDO we built registration and attendee management. Each started as a written specification of who does what, and when.

02

Designing around POPIA from the data model up

Custom systems usually hold more personal information than public websites: ID numbers, CVs, bank details, health or disciplinary notes. We design the data model so each role sees only what it needs, sensitive fields are protected, and records can be exported or deleted when someone exercises their rights. We map every external service the application talks to, because POPIA section 72 limits sending personal information outside South Africa to set conditions your Information Officer should confirm.

03

Payments and integrations

Some applications take money: membership renewals, application fees, service bookings. We connect them to South African gateways such as Payfast, Ozow, Peach Payments or Paystack, keeping the official plugin or API at the core so it remains supported. Beyond payments, we integrate with accounting packages, CRMs, HR systems and SMS or email providers through their APIs, and we confirm what each system allows during discovery rather than after the scope is signed.

04

Built in stages you can see

We break the application into stages, starting with the workflow that saves you the most time. Each stage is demonstrated on staging, tested with realistic data and released when you approve it. Because our team in Lagos is only one hour behind Johannesburg, demos and testing sessions fit inside your normal day. Development projects start from $5,000, with each stage scoped and priced in writing.

05

When WordPress is the wrong foundation

WordPress suits a wide range of business applications, but not all of them. Very high-volume transactional systems or software with unusual real-time requirements may be better served by another stack. If discovery shows that, we tell you, explain why and suggest what to look for in another supplier. We would rather lose a project than build something that will fight its own foundations.

Our work

Platforms we have built.

These three systems show the range of web applications our team builds: a recruitment portal with an HR dashboard, a national boot camp registration platform and a ticketing system that scanned more than 10,000 tickets.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can WordPress really run a business application?

For many internal and customer-facing tools, yes. It already handles accounts, roles, security updates and an admin interface, so our effort goes into your specific workflow. We have built recruitment portals, registration systems and ticketing on it. Where another stack would serve you better, we say so in discovery.

How do you scope a custom system?

We run a discovery workshop with the people who will use it, map the current process, and write a functional specification describing roles, screens, data and integrations. That document becomes the written scope and price. Changes later are agreed in writing before we build them.

Can the application connect to our accounting software?

Usually, if the accounting package offers an API or reliable import and export. We check what it supports in discovery and build the connection on staging with sample data first. If no reliable route exists, we suggest alternatives, such as scheduled exports your finance team reviews.

Where will our data be hosted?

We host through Cloudways or Hostinger and tell you exactly which region your server and backups use. Because POPIA section 72 governs transfers outside South Africa, your Information Officer should confirm the arrangement. If you need data kept in a particular location, raise it early.

What does a web application cost?

Web applications are development work, starting from $5,000 per project. The price depends on the number of roles, workflows, integrations and reports. We quote in US dollars after discovery and often split large systems into stages so you can start with the most valuable part.
